How To Stay Healthy After 40

How To Stay Healthy After 40

Good morning! I’m not writing a “real” post today. But I am asking for your input! I get emails all the time about what I do as far as workouts, eating, etc. I am a work in progress, I’m not as healthy as I’d like to be but I am taking steps to get there!

So I thought this next week, I would take several days and share with you what I’m doing right now, at this season of my life. I have made some significant changes this year to my health and if you’re interested, I’ll share them with you.

I’m not an expert but I am over 40 and I’m going through changes that are sometimes difficult. We’ll probably talk hot flashes, hormones and mood swings.

So what I need to know from you, is this something you would be interested in? Just leave me a comment and let me know!

Have a great Saturday! This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!! Psalm 118:24

  1. I tried two antidepressants without any luck. But they must work for some women, so it is worth a try. Does your Dr. know about Bio-Identical hormones, from a compounding pharmacy (in a skin gel) Also, I wrote on another post about a really nice breathing technique. Breath in through your mouth, and out through your nose and it really will cool you down in a minute or two. My friend who told me about it said it actually makes her chill to goosebumps.

  2. Cyndi,

I would be very interested in following a post, or several posts regarding this subject. I am 52 yrs. old and I am busier now than I was in my 20’s. Yet, the hormonal changes have been very challenging and of course aging is another factor that I need to add into my situation. Now, that’s not to sound negative, just honest !! I constantly have to tell myself . . . . “Ellen, don’t let your hormones run your spirit” when I am testy or sad. Enough said, I just think the Lord will use this information to keep me strong, for His Will to be Done and to Love my family with the Strength and Joy that is necessary while I am on this side of Heaven.

  3. I would love to hear what you are doing to stay healthy. I try to take care of myself, but it’s always good to hear what other women are doing. I had a hysterectomy when I was 44, but still have my ovaries. My Dr. told me that I would still go through the change, but no hot flashes or mood swings as of yet. I will be 51 in a few days, so who knows what’s going on 🙂
    Keep us posted, MG

  4. Yes please! I have heard over and over again that clean eating is 70% of a weight loss issue and only 30% consists of working out smartly. Has not really helped the menopause issue…but at least I feel better about myself. I have used Estroven, but it seems not to be working the last month or so 🙁 Any info you can help us with would be most grateful!

  5. All information is helpful. There is so much out there from the “experts” but I would rather here it from real women going through this season of our life! I just turned 50 and have menopausal for 6 years! I think extreme stress threw me in early! My skin has changed so much. Dry and itchy yet lotions make me feel like I put Saran Wrap on! Help!

  6. I tried to go off HRT for three years because of all the studies I read showing it increased my chances for all kinds of cancer. Those three years were AWFUL. I had such bad flashes that I began to choose to stay home over going out and being embarrassed by “a spell”. I finally went back to the Dr and said never mind…I’ll take my chances. She has said she will give me HRT for just a short period and then she wants to switch me to an antidepressant that has shown to be successful in treating hot flashes. Anyone with any experience taking such a drug? Any more natural remedies for “spells” would be greatly appreciated as I try to take as little medication as possible. I would rather sniff lavender or sleep with a garlic clove under my pillow 😉 then take another pill.

  7. Absolutely! At 45, I’m noticing changes. I think it’s important to have ‘the talk’ at this age just like our mothers had with us when we were adolescents. I want to know what to expect! And how to be the healthiest I can be at whatever age I am.

  8. I know you were eating more healthy and was wondering if you were following a certain diet etc. Also so you exercise on your own or with other people and how do
you get motivated to keep at it.

  9. Hi Cyndi.

Would love to hear more about all. I’m 47 and going to be 48 in October. Wihen I started exercising smarter (not longer), and eating cleaner, my hot flashes seemed to go away. I did not have severe hot flashes, but maybe once a day. I have to say, I’ve been on and off the exercise bandwagon for years, and it does help the symptoms, but I’ve concluded that eating cleaner and sleeping enough are certainly as important, if not more important. I do know this…we cannot out exercise a bad diet. I think diet is so important, especially after 45. When I was 40, I was in the best shape of my life and ate most of what I wanted. Now, I have to watch the processed food and sugar or I feel and look awful. I am certainly a work in progress and would love to hear your comments. I’m trying to stay healthy for my 4 year old daughter! 🙂

    Have a wonderful Sunday.

  10. This is a subject that everyone goes through, but no one really wants to talk about. As a 53 year old woman, I am a bit late coming to the “menopause party” and it has been a rough transition for me over the last few months. I welcome any opportunity to share with my fellow “hot flash” buddies! We need each other more than ever at this time in our lives!

  11. Yes Please!! I have no one to visit with about being in my 40s and all of these changes. I would love to hear more about your experience and others who follow you!

  12. Cyndi- I believe I am your age or very close to it! (45 turning 46). Making my yearly GYN appointment soon to discuss ” peri- menopause” etc. …anything you would like to add would be great!! I think I’m starting hot flashes… Such fun!! Lol!! Always enjoy reading what you have to share 🙂
    God bless 🙂

  13. Cyndi – I just recently found your blog and have really enjoyed it. I would be very interested in the tips you have.

  14. Yes! Yes! Yes! I recently saw “Motherhood-the Musical” and it touched on these and other mom related subjects. My friend and I laughed and cried and laughed again as it took us through the emotional roller coaster of motherhood. With songs about the way our bodies were, post-baby bladder problems, etc, it was perfect! And now I’m ready to hear what you will be delving into. What a blessing to know we are not alone in our experiences!

  15. Please post away! I am 49 and am just beginning “the change”. So far, I’m not liking any of it! Would love to hear more from you and all the readers!

  16. I just found your blog today and just wanted to say I love it! I will probably be asking to work with you soon. Keep up the positive support!

  17. This sounds like a great topic. I grew up in a house where you didn’t ask about “body” things, no older sisters to turn to, and I don’t totally trust everything I read on the internet. It would be nice to hear what some cyber sisters have found that helps at this age. Thanks for all you do for your readers!

  18. Yes, most definitely. There is many changes happening to us women once we hit 40. I can’t wear the same clothing styles and eat like I use to. It would be great to read about how someone else who is experiencing the same kind of changes and is coping with them.

  19. Having survived menopause, well mostly, (as soon as I say the hot flashes are gone another one shows up!!) I think its great to share experiences. Women are much more open about menopause now than even when I started 16 yrs ago. I was so thankful for friends to talk to and share experiences with so we didn’t think we were the only one going through it. Our bodies do change but I’m thankful to be here to get wrinkles and grow older! I am 63, widowed at 53 and feeling blessed to just be alive! I lost my husband when we were pretty young and that has changed how I look at aging. We have to be careful not to put too much pressure on ourselves as women to try and stay looking like we did when we were 35! Even if I weigh more than I did when I was 40 it doesn’t stop me from enjoying my life. I have always been interested in fashion even though my style has adjusted somewhat because of my age. I love your blog because of how you promote the idea that just because we age doesn’t mean we should stop caring about how we look after ourselves, including eating, exercise and fashion 🙂

  20. Yes…would love to hear more about what you do for exercise AND how to deal with menopause. I have been going in and out of it for two years now and it has not been fun dealing with the hot flashes. I would love to hear if anyone has found anything that works to control them. Love hearing from you everyday. Am I in the correct place to read your blog or is there another place that you post daily. Some of the readers mentioned what they are addicted to…mine is sweets and would love to hear how you cut those out with your “clean eating”. Thanks for being there to help us out.

  21. I’m in! i enjoy your blog so talking about women things would be a great addition! i would also love to hear from your regular posters!! Looking forward to next week! Have a blessed weekend!

  22. Would love to hear what you have to say and look forward to some of the other women’s comments to come! I love your blog and tune in whenever you post something new. 🙂 Blessings to you as you follow Him in all He has for you!

  23. Yes, I am 51 and will enjoy your writing on this topic. I’m always glad when my email signals another post from you, like a visit from a friend.

  24. This would be great! My 21 year old, very fit son is home on leave from the Air Force and he took me to the gym yesterday and I loved it! Of course the way he works out and the way I do are totally different! Would love to hear more about women’s health issues and how to be healthy! Great idea Cyndi!

  25. Thanks Cyndi! Yes I think we all would like an honest discussion of how the body changes after 40. I must say you appear to have lost weight or toned a little in the last month or so. Is this due to clean eating? Have others in your family noticed a change? In the meantime I am addicted to pop tarts and I’m sure that’s not healthy or clean eating! Help!

  26. absolutely and for those who are not yet experiencing this something on Premenopausal would be nice too. help transition into the menopause stage.
    another great idea from Cyndi

  27. I’m 45 and have been experiencing LBL (light bladder leakage). It’s so embarrassing. I’d like to know what other ladies do about this.

  28. Yes! I’m going to turn 50 next month! :O Any information about this season of life, including the change, is much needed and appreciated!

  29. I am now in my mid 50’s. Ten years later and I wish had had more information. It was like puberty when you just wish you had a mom to tell you why your emotions, body and signals were on a roller coaster ride. Start walking if you havent already. Get a signal worked out for your family to warn them about your moods. Carry a spray bottle of a fragrance mist with alcohol for cooling down and now I know why women carried handkerchiefs!!!! I loaded up at a craft fair and soaked through them before I got home! I dont need blankets, sweaters or coats for 10 years now and I used to be cold all the time!

  30. I know that you have changed your eating habits. I have too and struggle with side items to go with my meals since I am trying to stay away from carbs. Any suggestions?

  31. “Over 40” topics and fashion are why I tune in every few days to begin with, so I would definitely enjoy the subject. I’m on the slippery side of my 40’s and doing my best to make it through. (a helpful insight on your website: finding where to leave a comment was difficult. I looked at the end of the post, but finally found it at the top, under the post topic. )
