How To Dress The Inverted Triangle Body Type

We’ve talked about the Apple Body Type, the Banana Body Type, the Pear Body Type and the Hourglass Body Type. Today is our last body type and it’s the Inverted Triangle.

Here are the characteristics of the Inverted Triangle Type. Do any of these describe you?

  • You have broad shoulders
  • Narrow hips and relatively slender limbs
  • Some inverted triangle body types have a straight waist and a flat-ish bottom
  • Others have a defined waist line and curvier bottom
  • Bust size can vary

You are a rare breed because the inverted triangle is the least common body type found amongst women.

Here are some guidelines on what the Inverted Triangle body type can wear. Remember these are only guidelines and they’re a good starting point.

Your goal: draw attention to your lower body and minimize your upper body

  • Dresses with the empire cuts, wrap dresses and high-waist puffy skirts will look great on you
  • The best pants for an inverted triangle are bootcut or relaxed fit pants with a wider hemline
  • Pants with pocket flaps on the back will help your bottom look bigger as your body type tends to have a small bottom
  • Keep the lapels on jackets and coats small or mid size and relatively refined
  • Always go for darker colors on the top and lighter colors on the bottom
  • V-neck or scoop-neck tops will draw attention away from your broad shoulders
  • A clean and simple style on the top is always best for this body shape
  • Avoid colorful scarves, and statement necklaces that will attract the attention to your shoulder area
  • Long pendant necklaces will create a focus in the centre of the body

Clothes for the inverted triangle body type to avoid:

  • Oversized collars and lapels tend to make shoulders look broader
  • Don’t wear boat neck tops
  • Don’t wear thin spaghetti-strap tops
  • Stay away from puffy sleeves and shoulder pads

Here are some clothes that would work for the Inverted Triangle Body Type. All these pieces can be found at Macy’s and I added them to my Fashion Over 40 Pinterest Board.

So have you figured out your body type? You could be a mixture of two of the body types.

Beauty For the Heart~~One of my readers said to share Deuteronomy 31:8 with my daughter, Courtney. It’s a beautiful verse so I thought I’d share it with you too.

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Someone needs to hear those words today!

Have a blessed day!

  1. WOW. I was surprised to get encouragement from an article about dressing for the Inverted Triangle. I’ve been very discouraged lately, with my husband gone. He died a little over a year ago, on November 2nd, 2017. Christmas this year has been especially lonely, even though I have 3 kids with me. That verse really helps. Thank you.

  2. I love that you have brought this very important topic to us. I had forgotten all about my body type and proper clothing styles. I guess I became wrapped up on the trends and on what everyone else is wearing. Next up…how about shoes? Knowing when to say “Oh No Stiletto…not today”. 🙂

  3. This is accurate overall. A skinny jean or legging can work with a tunic and a heavier or chunkier boot. Also, if you wear a long and narrow scarf and create a vertical line with it (inside the neckline of a blazer or long cardigan) it is manageable.

  4. Good read, but not my body shape… I definitely have hips. LOL I am loving all these body shapes though and already found mine (the hourglass)and am trying out a few pieces of clothing that I never thought would fit my body type. Thank you for all the helpful information! God is so wonderful to me…I can’t thank Him enough. I thank the Lord there are women like you that care to share your blogs of knowledge with us all !!

  5. Yea! I was hoping you would do this one! I go apple in the middle if I quit working out, so Zumba it is! I wear a larger top than bottom, and my legs and booty are my better features. I love a wrap dress, straight or boot jeans work well. Skinny jeans are so cute, but do absolutely nothing for me, so none in my closet. I like scarves, your recommendations say not to wear them, but if you do a longer type tie in the center instead of keeping them up around your face, they can make me look more balanced. I think we should all love ourselves, no matter what our shape, that’s the way God made us! I think people in all their shapes and sizes are beautiful! Thanks for helping us all to make the most of our blessings!
