Spring 2014 Trends In Nail Color

I’m sitting in my home office, looking out the window, and all I can see is white. Everything is covered in snow, but I’m thinking spring.

In fact, I’ve been looking at the spring 2014 trends in nail color. I’m pretty conservative when it comes to my fingernails. I stick with light colors or a french manicure, with a very thin white line.

Right now, I’m doing gel nails. I go back and forth with using them (I’ve also tried the SNS nails. I don’t like acrylic nails at all). My biggest hang up with manicures is I hate to sit and have them done. I’m always thinking of a million things I could be doing!

My opinion is, if you go too crazy with your nails when you’re over 40, you start to look like you’re trying too hard. Remember, we’re not trying to look like a teenager.

I have short fingers so dark colors don’t work for me. But on my toes, I’m a little more brave.

So here is what’s hot this spring! The ombre look.

The half moon look. I’m not a big fan of this look.

Do yo get manicures? Have you tried gel nails? What are your thoughts?

Beauty For the Heart~~I’ve been reading about character in my bible study. Character is defined as strength of moral fiber.  A person’s character is the sum of his or her thoughts, intentions, desires, and actions. As christians, we need to be “women of integrity.”

Proverbs 10:9 says, Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.

Have a blessed day!

  1. Me too! Nurse as well. When I take a week off my nails get so much stronger, but whatcha gonna do? I am a pedi girl as well :) One of the many sacrifices of being a nurse!

  2. I am so glad Walgreens carries Essie! Also in my area CVS carries it and Ulta has every color imaginable! My toes were very tired of winter, so got a pedi yesterday in Naughty Nautical, really great teal green :)

  3. I think the Ombré look is very pretty. I’ve tried artificial nails (acrylic and “solar” pink and white) and had some negative experiences. In fact it took my nail beds about 6 months to heal from damage done. So I decided to just go natural and have my nails as healthy as possible–not to mention the expense and upkeep.

  4. I don’t polish my nails. I work in a hospital and am constantly washing my hands. Nail polish doesn’t usually last a day. :(
I don’t get regular manicures, but I get a pedicure every three weeks, no matter what. It’s one of the few luxuries I do just for me.

    Cheryl,

I have used the Essie polish several times. I like it as much, if not better, than OPI. It’s long wearing, stays shiny, and there are many colors to choose from. And I love that I can get it at Walgreens or Walmart, both of which are located in my small town. :-)

  6. One more thing I got my hair done last Friday, cut 14″s off, some what like yours and I love it!

  7. What a wonderful thought…Spring.

I am not keen on any of the nail trends lately,I have long fingers and long nail beds and I like you like to keep my polish light.Speaking of ombre I don’t like it on nails or hair, the hair makes me think that your just to lazy.I have not had “nail” in years, they left my nails so damaged that 7-10 years later I still have 1 nail that cracks down the center when it grows past my tips.I had fiberglass nails.

  8. Okay, so this nurse is jealous of all you pretty nail people, not allowed at work and the hand sanitizer means my nails are pretty trashed all the time. I just wanted to give a shout out for Essie polish. I think it is much longer lasting than OPI polish, a pedi will usually last me 3 weeks and I am hard on my feet. Anyone else love Essie? I do get a sports manicure, or a buff natural nail manicure every once in a while. I love navy or grey nails for winter, brights for summer, never red.

  9. I’ve tried it all and I actually like the KISS nails for small hands. I can tweak out 2 sets in the kit & they last for about 2 weeks. I do give my nails a break at times from artificial. Love looking at all the nail art, but I will leave that to younger women.

    Hi Cyndi,
I have not tried gel, but a few years ago I started wearing Shellac. The polish is applied to your own nails, it is durable and stays on for 2-3 weeks! Like gel/acrylics you can see the nail growth. The first visit was $ 20. To have the old polish removed and another coat done costs $ 25 at the salon I go to. Have you tried Shellac?

  11. Cyndi,
When I was working I use to get a soft pink gel with white tips. It looked really natural. Once I get to working again and we can put it in the budget, I’ll probably go back to that. Basically I’m old fashioned I guess.

    What do you wear?

  12. Love gel nails and even though I’m way over 40 I like to wear all colors! The nail salons around here will do a gel color change. No manicure, just removing the polish, filing if you like to keep them short, buffing and applying new polish. Cyndi, you might like that since it doesn’t take as long. It’s also cheaper.

  13. Hi Cyndi.

When I was working full time, I had my nails done every 10 days or so. It was something I loved to do, but I did hate sitting for so long! LOL I have only had about 5 pedicures in my life. I haven’t had my nails done in about 5 years now. Maybe I’ll take Isabella and have them paint hers too. :) I don’t really like the trends shown, so I’ll have to see what I like when I go. I have always loved short nails with red polish. It’s probably not in now, but I’m sure it will make a comeback. Everything does. :)

I hope you have a great afternoon. Thanks for sharing.

  14. I have a standing appointment with my nail tech for gel nails every two weeks. It’s just a little reward for myself that I started when I was working on getting my degree (at 40+ years of age!). Now that I’ve gotten my degree, I still keep my appointments because I like having nice looking hands and nails and with the gel polish, you don’t have to be so finicky about the care. I find it to be very durable. As for the new trends, I can’t say I’m a fan of any of those shown, so I’ll just have to stick to my usual choices I guess. :-) I don’t go too overboard but I do like brighter colors for spring and summer-hot pink, corals, etc. I think those colors look nice, especially once you get a tan. :-)

  15. I do at home gel manicures with the Sally Hanson kit. Love that it looks super shiny and once I am all done applying, I am free to go about my activities. I can only get it to last a week though…I try to give them a break from the gel polish every now and then and go “bare” or just a regular clear coat. When you remove the gel polish with a heavy or pure acetone remover, follow up with a good soap washing and then rub nail oil into them and the cuticles.

  16. Love the gel nail! Lasts for several weeks and I don’t have to “baby” my nails to make it last. Any tips on removing the polish that doesn’t damage the nail? My nails are still recovering from my Christmas manicure!
    Love your blog!

  17. All white here too, so tired of it, have the gel nails and I do like them but I’m not great at going back at the right time to have them redone:) So I’ve decided to just get a manicure to see if I like it better… like I said I do like the gel nails but they do limit me on what I can do with my hands. I’ll probably wear a pink color when I do get the manicure and I do go bold with my toes!

  18. I am right on track with you! Tired of winter, I pulled out a turquoise blue color this week to remind me this snow will eventually melt!
