6 Eyeshadow Tips For Women Over 40

Since we talked about eyeliner on Tuesday, I thought it would be a good idea to share some eyeshadow tips today.

6 eyeshadow tips for women over 40

Here’s the best advice I can give you when it comes to eyeshadow–stick with the “less is more” beauty rule. Too much eyeshadow will age you.

Here are 6 eyeshadow tips for women over 40:
  • DON’T match your eyeshadow to your outfit. A definite no no.
  • DO wear soft color eyeshadows like browns, pinks and neutrals in soft pretty shades. Often times a slight hint of color is all your eyes need to really pop.
  • DON’T paint three distinct colors on your lid with the last one being a pearly white shadow on your brow bone. This is an outdated look.
  • DO sweep a neutral shade across the eyes by day. If you like a little more color, apply a darker shade to the crease to add definition. You really don’t need more than 2 colors on your lids.
  • DON’T use shiny eyeshadows or shadows with glitter. These will only accentuate any wrinkles you have around your eyes.

Remember we are trying to keep our face looking soft and natural.

Most women our age look good in some shade of brown. If you’re eyes are green–brown with a khaki undertone. Blue eyes–a sand or taupe eyeshadow. Brown eyes–a light charcoal brown works well.

Do you wear eyeshadow? What’s your favorite eyeshadow? Color? Brand?

Beauty For the Heart~~I’ve started a new Bible study called Glorious Grace from the book of Ephesians. Where would we be without grace?

But God loves us deeply. He is full of mercy. So he gave us new life because of what Christ has done. He gave us life even when we were dead in sin. God’s grace has saved you. Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIRV)

Have a grace filled day!

  1. Naked Basics 1 and Naked Basics 2 are the best in my book! So many different neutral combinations…and even some darker ones for those special evenings out on the town 🙂

  2. Clinique’s Teddy Bear eye shadow quad and Stila’s In The Know palette are both matte. I love the Stila’s palette. It has grey and brown-toned neutrals.

  3. Check your shadows for the ingredient called bismuth oxychloride, which is often the cause of the allergic reaction. The Bare Minerals brand contains this ingredient. Try using products that do not contain bismuth oxychloride to see if you have better luck.

  4. Hi Cyndi, I was wondering which neutral eye shadow color you use for your daily base? Any shade suggestions to use for the entire lid? My coloring is light olive. Thank you. Beth

  5. So unfortunately, I can’t wear drug store or even name brand eye shadows because of severe allergies to something that is put into them. I can’t even wear Bare Minerals. I purchase my eye shadows from Everyday Minerals on line. In fact, I JUST placed a order for some new shades.

I too am guilty of the off white on my brow bone. I thought it was supposed to make them look more awake. Might have to rethink that.

  6. IT Cosmetics has an all matte eyeshadow palette that is beautiful! It has a pink case. Check it out!

  7. I am 26 and I totally read this blog because I love the classic style and also, I’m a mom, so this blog is practical for actual living rather than walking around in high heels 🙂

Anyways, I have naked 1, 2 and 3 and I know many women who are in their 30 and 40s who really like the 3. It is shimmery but not glittery and it is subtle.

  8. as always whether makeup or diet, exercise etc. MODERATION MODERATION MODERATION

loving the grace message from Ephesians thanks

  9. Yes to eyeshadow! I have brown eyes & my favorite color to wear is purple. I think any color is fine to wear at any age as long as it’s not overdone & complements your eye color and complexion. Blending is key. A lighter skin tone color with a slight shimmer under the brow bone works like magic to lift a droopy lid. IMO, of course

  10. OK, so I’m guilty of the outdated “pearly white shadow on your brow bone.” My eyes are kinda deep-set, so I feel that a lighter color helps draw them out. What should I choose as an alternative? Maybe the same color in a matte finish?

  11. Donna, I think the white on your brown bone is fine. I think Cindy is just saying don’t have 3 distintive stripes on your lids. I use an ivory on my brown bone because I too have small eyes.

  12. Amy and Tracy – the Naked Basics are all matte. There is just a tiny hint of shimmer in the lightest color, which is okay if used sparingly along the brow bone.

  13. I agree with the shimmer in UD Naked…love the colors but not sure if I should splurge! Agree with less is more! My brown eyes get a bit of blue or purple on occasion but try to stick with taupe/browns for every day. So what is consensus of this particular eye shadow palette for over-50?

  14. Do you think the Naked palettes are too shiny/glittery? I have put off getting any of those because I worry it would make me look like a wannabe-teenager. But they are so pretty and I am tempted.

  15. The Naked Basics by UD is my fav. I had been through numerous other brands/colors and spent many dollars on product I couldn’t use. I tried the Naked Basics and ta-da! It’s the best! The colors work, it’s highly pigmented so only a little is needed and with a little primer, the staying power is great. It’s a winner!

  16. I love the Almay trios that are made to work for your eye color… For my brown eyes, I use both the browns and the purple version. Great tips! I think we sometimes forget the little things when it comes to makeup application, so this is a good reminder!

  17. Thanks for the good advice. I have always used only 2 eyeshadows because I have small eyes, but I have sometimes put the white on my brow bone. Oops!
