Building Your Fall Wardrobe {Jeans}

**This post is from last fall but it’s a good reminder as you start looking at your fall wardrobe. Make sure you have a great pair of jeans!

31 Days of Fall Fashion & Beauty Tips
Hi there! If you’re joining me for the first time, you can catch up with all my 31 Days of Fall Fashion & Beauty Tips here. We’re on Day 11 and we’re Building Your Fall Wardrobe. Today it’s all about a great fitting pair of jeans!

Building Your Fall Wardrobe {little black dress}

We all need a pair of great fitting jeans. I recommend having jeans you can wear with high heels and another pair to wear with flats.

Also, make sure they are flattering for your body type. If you find a pair you like that fits you well, you can buy them in two lengths to wear with flats and heels.

You can also have different styles, boot cut, skinny, straight leg or trousers. It’s important to find the style you like and you feel your best in.

Here’s how to find the right pair of  jeans for you:

  • Focus on the fit.
  • Look for dark wash denim-darker jeans are more slimming.
  • Avoid mommy jeans-mommy jeans are high-waisted, light-washed, with tapered-legs.
  • Don’t wear your daughter’s jeans either!  Clinton Kelly from TLC’s What Not to Wear says, “Anytime you wear something that’s meant for a teen or tween, it says that you don’t know who you are and you’re trying to hold onto your youth. The opposite is actually true: Wearing jeans for younger girls makes you look older. Keep in mind you don’t have to wear the trendiest jean. Find a style you like that’s modern, sleek, and sophisticated. It’s your time to be you!”

Some of my favorite brands of jeans are INC, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Banana Republic.

Do you have a great pair jeans? What’s your favorite brand of jeans?

  1. When I was a size 12 Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda Average Jeans fit me like they knew my exact measurements. Since October 2015 June 2016 I have gone from a size 12 to a size 6. At size 10 I had to get new jeans, at size 8 I had to get new jeans and tat size 6 i have to get new jeans and Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda fit me at each size like they were made exactly for me. They are figure flattering and they don’t look like mom jeans.

  2. Cyndi – You didn’t say where you purchased your outfit. I love it when you do that. Would you share with us please. I’m interested to see where your jeans came from and brand/style (skinny, straight, etc).

  3. Check out the invisabelt on amazon, an adjustable belt that lays flat, you cannot see it under your shirt. Best wishes!

  4. I am the opposite, shorty! I love white house black market jeans, they are pricey, but they last. They come in talls.

  5. I really like how White House Black Market jeans fit and they hold up well if taken care of properly. Jones of NY is another good fitting jean. Both brands are made well which in turn give a good fit. I also like Style & Co. from Macy’s for a jean to wear while bumming around the house. They are stylish, reasonably priced and comfortable.

  6. Cheryl, so glad you posted this! I’m a “shorty”, too. Never thought to look in WHBM. I just assumed they didn’t carry short lengths. Could you please fill me in on invisabelts? I’m not familiar with that but sounds like something I could certainly use. Thank you!

  7. I only wear Loft Curvy jeans and they run sales all the time where they are 40 or 50% off. Loft has all different fits and styles so you can’t go wrong there. I will tell you that they do stretch out so you might want to get a size smaller. I noticed online they do have a tall fit and in the store they carry petites. They usually have 2/3 different shades of denim as well.

  8. Love, love, love White House Black Market Jeans. I am 5-2, they come in short, regular and tall. I have them in crop, ankle, straight, boot and flare. They are that perfect not to low and not to high waist. I am a huge fan of my invisabelts with jeans. They keep the jeans in perfect place when they stretch out a little from wear. Hope this helps someone else 🙂

  9. Go to Macy’s they have a line of jeans that are made in Egypt. I am 57 and an average built and they are great jeans. For some reason, they fit me better than any other type and I have tried on a lot!!!

  10. I had so much trouble finding a pair that fit at the waist & hips both. Eddie Bauer Curvey fit jeans are my favorite. I also have found some at Old Navy (sweetheart fit.) Usually, I can’t do skinny jeans. I found a pair of them in Thailand that work for me. I was happy. 🙂

  11. Cyndi,

What brand of jeans do you think would fit our body type?? I am having difficulty with that and making sure they stay looking good.

    Love, Traci

  12. I struggle with jeans that fit well. I have found Simply Vera Wang jeans from Kohls are awesome. She has boot cut, slim and the fit is consistenand they have stretch. I took all of my ill fitting jeans to mentors closet and I will only wear vera Wang. If you like wearing your jeans tucked in your boots, the ankle length jeans work great because you don’t have all of the bulk in your boots.

  13. until this one, I have been pretty much on target. Would you believe I have owned only two pairs of jeans in my entire life ? I got so fed up with trying to et something that had long enough legs that did NOT have a crotch that was so long I could have the waist align with my bra or droop halfway down my thighs. It is nearly as bad with other pants but jeans were the worst. Well past 40 nd still trying to figure out why the industry assumes that a tall has to be long in the crotch. Oh well, aren’t I glad my mother insisted that I learn to sew. I have tackled jeans for my daughter and some friends bur not myself.

  14. My sister has successfully died black jeans with Rit dye. An idea is to test out the color on a piece of faded jeans fabric before hitting it on your favorite jeans. I mixed a couple of colors of Rit dye once to fix a bleach spot on the carpet, playing with the proportions and testing on a piece of cloth (allowing it to dry) to see the color before going ahead with the carpet. I got a great match doing that. Good luck!

  15. Gloria Vanderbilt “Amanda” jeans fir me well. They are available at JCPenneys and Kohl’s. To avoid the “muffin top” invest in good shapewear.

  16. I LOVE Kut From the Kloth. I got a pair in my Stitch Fix box this summer and they are awesome. I get compliments every time I wear them.

  17. Hi Shawnda, I just got jeans from Old Navy (the Flirt style) that sit higher than usual (they are about 1 inch below my belly button) so the dreaded muffin top is hidden a little better. 🙂

  18. I have a great pair from the LOFT that I wear a lot. But my favorite pair is 13 years old and from Old Navy — just a nice fitting boot cut jean. Trouble is, now they’ve faded from washing and wearing and they don’t make that jean anymore! I’ve considered dying them dark indigo to revive them — ever tried that?
    Great post, Cyndi! Happy Friday!
    xo Heidi

  19. I love jeans…all jeans…almost. 🙂 LOL

I like Miss Me jeans, BKE jeans, J Crew toothpick jeans, True Religion jeans, and plain old Levis. I like the Miss Me and BKE in bootcut, J Crew and True Religion in straight leg, True Religion and Lauren Conrad in Skinny. Levis are great for flats because the length isn’t as long. I’m 5’6″, so a lot of jeans are longer on me. The skinny jeans can be worn much longer. I just let them bunch up at the bottom or wear riding boots/ankle boots. In the summer I roll them over and wear flats.

I was reading a blog earlier that said white jeans are still in for fall, especially when worn with grey. I think I’m going to try it. What do you think Cyndi?

Thanks for the post. Have a great weekend.
    Gina

  20. Hey Kim.

I love the Miss Me jeans too! If you subscribe to Stitch Fix, request a pair from them. I got a pair in one of my fixes, and I love them! I like the stitching and little bit of bling. 🙂 Just my personal opinion though.

    Have a great evening!

  21. Hi Dawn.

I read an article in one of the fashion magazines recently that the supermodel Karlie from Victoria’s Secret has her own line of jeans for women over 6′ tall. I don’t know the name of the jeans, but her name is Karlie Kloss…I think. She’s the model that recently cut off all of her hair into a bob. I don’t know how much you are willing to spend, but some of the designer brands have really long inseams…True Religion, Citizens of Humanity, AG, etc. You could also try Rock & Republic at Kohl’s. Good luck! I wish I were taller. 🙂

  22. My new favorite place to get jeans is Old Navy. They have dark denim in styles, Diva and Flirt, that fit my 50 year old mom body. They come in skinny and boot cut and are priced right! Right now they are 30% off!

  23. What’s your best advice for avoiding muffin tops (without resorting to mom jeans)? Do any of you have specific jeans that you like for this issue?

  24. I love american eagle (yes, junior jeans but I get dark colors with no rips/tears) or express jeans. They fit amazing! I am not a fan of *bling* jeans. Especially when I see it paired with a burn out t-shirt with equal amounts of bling…(look at Maurices and The Buckle and you will know what I mean). Also don’t like the jeans with big stitching. Just not a good look in my opinion. Simple, classic but not something that makes me look older either.

  25. I liked all the tips for the Jeans for us 40 and somethings….LOL
It seems that all styles of jeans are worn by both old and young. the skinny, the flare, and the fit jeans are seen by all ages. I have also seen the low rider jeans worn by women older then me(I am 46). Well, unless you are in your 70-80’s…and then sometimes “jeans” aren’t in the picture at all. Both my grannies stopped wearing jeans in their early 80’s…but my great Aunt who is 83 still loves her jeans and still rides her Harley motorcycle! LOL So I guess it is all in what you prefer to wear! 🙂
Have a great Day Cyndi….I am looking forward to tomorrows tip!!

  26. Thank you so much for these tips on essentials for one’s wardrobe. I love the ones with the white blouse; they are so great looking on you. And I like the picture with the white blouse and the gray sweater, belted. I, too, am looking for the right jeans as I pretty well live in them. They give a flattering look to most any top. But, I am short and prefer not to have them hemmed (it usually doesn’t give the right effect), so I am looking and will try your sources. Thank again for your encouragement, Cyndi, and have a blessed weekend.

  27. I am a jeans girl! I really love the skinny style and occasionally the boot cut, but most of my jeans are the skinny kind. Since I like to wear jeans so often I try not to spend a ton of money on a pair. I get my jeans from American Eagle and Old Navy. I do want to splurge on a pair of Miss Me jeans they are all the rage in the South and anyone of any age can wear them! I love how you can style the skinny jeans and wear them with so many types of shoes and they can be rolled up for the crop look or worn down. I am so glad this trend is here to stay!

  28. Love the tips on “jeans” this blog. I love and live in my jeans…I have work jeans, going to town jeans, relax-n jeans, and a few others. 🙂 You look very beautiful in your jeans, Cyndi! My favorite are the straight legged or skinny. I look too wide in the bootcut or wide legged jeans.

  29. Hi Cyndi,
Perferct timing! I need some new jeans and it’s time to go shopping! My problem is finding jeans looong enough. I wear size 6 long which works perfect for flats but then not at all great with heels -which I would love to pull off! So far, when I want a similar look, I wear my skinny jean, tucking them inside, of high heeled boots.
Any suggestions where I might find extra long jeans?
    Dawn

  30. Ha! I guess I should add that the only pair of jeans I have right now are “Silver” jeans with a “bling butt”. 🙂

  31. Thanks for this! I am having trouble finding jeans that meet these requirements. Just finding a darker wash is hard. Everything has what I call “bling butt”. (no thank you) Could you tell me what jeans you are wearing in this picture (with white blouse)? I guess I am looking in the wrong places… (and need to resign myself to paying more…)

  32. Love those outfits, especially the jeans with the gray cardi. My best-fitting jeans usually come from Gap. I have skinnies, as well as some dark wash slightly flared jeans that fit great from there. I also love Miss Me jeans for their fit. They usually have a bit of ‘bling’ on them but the fit is so good I get them anyway. Plus, I live in the south where bling on jeans is acceptable if you’re 8 or 80! 🙂 For trousers, I can usually only find them at Banana Republic. Blessings!

  33. Great tips on jeans Cyndi! Too true that now is our time to be who we are. It fits too with your beauty for the heart quote. It is so much easier to be content at my age now then when I was younger. Some of my youthful qualities seen as beautiful are fading but my understanding of true beauty is coming into full bloom. I would not trade that understanding and the contentment that comes with it to go back to being 18 for anything in the world. My song for the day… “Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me!” Thanks for the great reminder!! Krista
