28 Days of Spring Fashion (Day 11)

It’s Friday and Day 11 of my 28 Days of Spring Fashion! Today I’m styling a denim shirtdress.

I’ve been seeing these shirtdresses all over Pinterest. I think they’re perfect for spring and there are so many ways to style them.

This one from Gap is would be cute with converse sneakers.

I love the detail on this one from Anthropologie.

I know I said I was finished styling anything from Target but I forgot I had purchased this denim shirtdress. It’s cute and comfortable but it does have some side slits that are a little high.

If  I add this handbag, you don’t notice it so much. Would it be awkward to carry one on both sides? Ha!

28 Days of Spring Fashion (Day 11)
My husband loves the dress, of course, so I’ll wear it on a date night with him. The wedges are from Rack Room Shoes and aren’t they cute?? I will be styling them a lot this spring/summer.

  1. Hi Cyndi!
Would you mind sharing sometime about how to weed out old clothes when you bring in new? I tend to hang on to everything and hate the idea of parting with something and then the following week wishing I still had it! And because of that my closets are jampacked with clothes that I hardly wear anymore! Do you have a rule of thumb for that? And what about seasonal? Do you pack your seasonal clothes away and bring them out only when you’re wearing them or do you have everything in your closet at the same time? Just show us a picture of your closet, how about that?

      1. Diane, I know how you feel.. I cleaned out my closet today of winter clothes. I live in Savannah GA & winter is over for us. It was hard getting rid of things I do wear occasionally but as I parted with them I prayed that God would let some people in need get them. I take to salvation army.

        1. Diane, ask yourself “Would I buy this today?”. If no, then bag for give away. I just did this and found it so helpful in parting with some of my clothes. Hope this helps.

          1. I read somewhere to hang all your clothes with the hangers backwards. After you wear an item hang it back up with the hanger facing correctly. At the end of the season, whatever is left hanging backwards will be a good indication that it’s time to let it go. I haven’t tried this yet but hope to implement it this Spring. What I have been working on is trying to not buy an article of clothing or an accessory unless I know for sure I can wear it with things I already have to make it a complete outfit. So far, it’s not working so well! But I’m not a quitter, so will keep trying!

  3. Wear it like it is as it’s doesn’t appear to be any shorter than shorts you’ve styled. Plus, i like to wear these kind of things while I can!
I love the shirtdress style, but I think the cut is crucial. I’m not so fond of the collarless look here as I aways feel a collar helps frame and accentuate the face and jawline. I have a very old dark denim RL shirtdress I have to haul out of the archives. I think the time is right to resurrect it, although it has a straight hemline. Hope that’s not too passe.

  4. I just bought the Target shirt dress last weekend! I wore it yesterday without the belt (I have a definite apple shape:(), and with leggings and boots. I think shirt dresses are super cute with leggings…I plan to wear it this spring-with and without leggings-with flats and wedges!

  5. I have given in to the shirtdress so many times and always look like a gunny sack full of grain or potatoes with a cord around the middle. there are so many thrift stores with those ill fated purchases in them. I love seeing them on others but just cannot pull it off for myself. they can look casual or dressier

  6. Yikes…I am not graceful enough to wear this dress with the slits. Sometimes I forget to keep the knees together when I get out of the car. It’s what I call a stand up dress…it looks great standing up but sitting down may show your undercarriage…hahaha! Thanks for all the cute outfits. I am making mental notes!

  7. Hi Cyndi, I like the shirtdress, although the hi-lo hem might bug me, but I do like the other options you posted with symmetrical hems and that you coordinated the belt with the wedges, perhaps a wider belt might be more slimming? Target has a cute one that is stretchy macrame in the middle with cognac leather ends. As far as the dress being kind of short, for the past few years I have been wearing Skimmies Slipshort by Jockey. They are not shapewear (aka – torture devices) but give some coverage and don’t ride up like a slip can. They are very comfortable and also come in lots of fun colors.

Have a blessed day and keep up the inspiration, both fashion-wise and spiritually.

    1. Thank you Cindy for the info on the slipshorts by Jocky! Exactly what I need to keep those pudgy thighs of mine from rubbing together in a maxi skirt or any other dress/skirt. Especially in the summer! LOL! And I do have one of those torture devices. It sits in the drawer…..

      1. The Jockey SS are SUPER comfortable. I like that with knee length dresses you don’t feel so “bare down there” with the slip shorts.

  8. Personally not a big fan of shirt dresses for myself so won’t be sporting any. You can purchase a lacy slip, that’s meant to be seen, so perhaps you could wear one to add a little femininity and flirtyness at the slits; sort of like the Antrhrpolgie dress, only in reverse. I would keep the belt the same color as the dress and wear a necklace to accessorize the outfit instead. Your shoes are to die for!

    1. I agree that a belt the same color would elongate the body and not cut you in half.. I need to look as tall as possible. Also love the idea of leggings and boots with this look. Would feel too naked with just bare legs and those slits on sides. Cindy is still young enough to pull off this cute look on her.

  9. Cindy it looks great and I’lI’ll be looking for a shirt dress too. Love the shoes as well. So thankful I found this blog. Trying to walk in grace and beauty this year. Have a blest weekend.

  10. I say wear it like it is, and leave the slits alone. I haven’t found one I like…yet. If I take the plunge and purchase a shirt dress, it will probably be a dark denim or black.

  11. I actually bought this dress at Target last year and wore it once, but I didn’t like how it hung on me so I returned it. I’m on the lookout for another one.

  12. Very cute! I had the same idea as LoriM about maybe putting some lace in the slit? It looks good on you the way it is though!
Love the Beauty from the Heart today.

  13. I think the shirt dresses are super cute but I can’t seem to pull it off. I always feel short and dumpy in them. My daughter says “no mom”

    1. Sorry -my replies are always cut off for some reason. Anyway it looks good on you Cindi and I’m looking forward to see what else you style.

      1. This made me laugh!! I can’t count the number of times I’ve asked one of my teenage daughters to check out a new outfit I’m trying only to hear, “Mom. No.” Haha!!

  14. Love the shirt dress on YOU! I’d probably leave the slit alone, especially since it looks like it has the hi-low hem. You certainly have the figure and legs for the style, so go with it, especially on date night! I’m not planning on any shirt dress purchases. I don’t have the figure or legs for them. I’m with Deanna B, and will be checking out the maxi skirt for the summer. Again, thank you for your inspiration!

  15. I love the shirtdress. One thing you could do about the side slits is to wear it with leggings and ballet flats. I’ve been thinking about doing that for spring because I’ve heard that’s a popular look for spring. I think I will go get that one at Target. Thanks for the idea.

  16. I thjnk you could take a needle and thread and just sew the slit closed more. It’s so high that it makes it look like a man’s shirt. So maybe wear it on a date with your husband and then sew the sides a little. 🙂

  17. I think you should leave the slit alone, especially since your husband loves it!!! Looks so cute on you:)

  18. I don’t like the shirtdresses, my legs are ugly with white skin and purple veins, so I don’t really like anything with the slits. I prefer sheath dresses myself, but I only wear dresses to church mostly. I do LOVE maxi skirts because they cover my legs and are so comfortable, and hide imperfections, especially if they are a printed pattern. This outfit looks GREAT on you, just NOT for me. Thanks Cindi for all of your inspiration!

  19. I wonder if you could sew something cute into that slit to make it not so high?
Or find or make a lacy, short half-slip to fill it in?
Or would that ruin the look?

    1. I was thinking the same thing-either a matching denim insert or something like a liberty print calico would probably make you feel more comfortable. It looks lovely but I know from my own experience that if I feel like I have to fight my clothing I rarely wear it.
