How I Style My Hair

Several months ago I shared with you all that I was going to let my hair grow out a little. So today I thought I’d share how I style my hair and some frequently asked questions I get asked about my hair.

How I Style My Hair
1. One question I get asked a lot is do I color my hair and what color do I use?

  • I do have my hair colored about every 4 weeks (I have a lot of gray). My hair stylist uses this formula: 1/2-4 and 1/2-5NA.
  • After she colors my hair she adds Goldwell clear gloss at the end to help with shine.

2. How do I style my hair? What tools do I use?

  • When my hair was shorter I used a flat iron all over. But now that my hair is longer I use velcro rollers and I flat iron my bangs and a few other places.
  • I use a Sedu Diamond Flat Iron. (A flat iron is one tool that I would recommend getting a good one. The cheap ones can damage your hair.)

Here is how I put my velcro rollers in my hair. I use the larger velcro rollers because my hair curls easily and I don’t want tight curls.

I put them in after I blow dry my hair. I leave them in while I’m putting on my makeup, around 15 minutes.

3. What products are you using on your hair?

I like to change products every few months. I like to experiment and I’m a sucker for new products. Here are the products I’m using right now.

Proganix Volume Shampoo and Conditioner-This has mixed reviews but I’ve been using it for over a month and I like it.

How I Style My Hair
Pureology Volume Blow Dry Amplifier-If you’re looking for volume, this is a great product and it gets really good reviews. I use about a dime size amount throughout my hair.

How I Style My Hair
Biolage Anti-Static Spray-I’m the queen of static and this stuff is great for fly away hair plus it doesn’t leave any residue.

Here are some pictures of my hair. I’m not going to grow it out down my back but I wouldn’t mind a few more inches.

It’s long enough now that I can put it in a low ponytail which is nice especially during warmer weather. I know some of you thought I should keep my hair shorter but right now I’m enjoying the length.

How I Style My Hair
I usually get some questions after these type of posts. Do you have any other questions that I didn’t answer?

I’m so honored that you have taken time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’d love for you to subscribe to my blog through email. You can also follow me on social media. I’m on FacebookInstagram and Pinterest!

Beauty For the Heart~~I am not someone who tries to predict the “end times.” I trust that God has a plan and it will happen on His time table. But as I read these verses, they did remind me of the days we are living in.

You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.  They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! 2 Timothy 3:1-5

If we learn nothing else from these verses…..choose carefully the people we spend our time with!

Have a blessed day!

  1. I love your hair like this. It is SO cute! Youthful, stylish and snappy!
    Thank you sharing your witness.

  2. I just started following you about 3 months ago and haven’t been disappointed! At 63, I love you styling tips and, as a Christian, notice that your styles are up to date but modest! Are you using the large or extra large Velcro rollers. My hair is cut in a similar style and I am letting it get a bit longer. It’s harder to get the volume I like! Louisiana humidity does a number on hair! Thanks for all you do for us!

  3. You are so helpful to me because my hair seems similar to yours.
The scripture really touched my heart.
    Thank you.

  4. Hi Cyndi! After years of looking for a style that would fit my facial features, I came upon your style on Pinterest. I LOVE your hair and my stylist is growing my style into the one you have. It will take me about a year to get all the layers to grow out. Not only are we fellow Jesus girls, but my dad went to be with the Lord on Sept. 22, 1994 …. the same day your mom did but several years later. My mom passed in 2008 and they’re both with our Savior and I’m looking forward to the rapture so we can all be together again.

I’m hoping that in the end, my hair looks like your longer style pictured here. I have dark, fine, naturally curly hair and when I blow it dry with a round brush, I can get it tamed down but with lots of body. My problem is that the longer my top layers get, the more they’re just falling flat and forming a part down the middle. I see you use velco rollers. I was wondering if after the rollers you tease the top/crown of your hair in order to give it height. I’ve never had to tease my hair because my top layers were always shorter and would stand up on their own with a curling iron. Now I’m not sure how to achieve the height on top. Help!

  5. I love your hair. Is your hair thick or then??? I have so much problem getting any height to stay in my hair. I can style it and it looks ok but then a new hour later my hair is as flat as it can be. Just like I did nothing to it. It is so frustrating. I have no body to my hair. Sometimes I think I need a bodywave or a perm.

  6. Hi Cyndi, Your hair long/sort always looks amazing. Your hair stylist do they layer your hair all over? You must have thick hair. My hair is on the thin side and I always need volume to help with the hair style. I use electric rollers on occasion when I go out. Other than that, I’m at the gym and do where it in a pony tail. I love the fullness you get in your hair. I live in Florida and the humidity does a number on my hair. Always falls fat no matter what. Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Thank You!

  7. I love your hair – long or shorter. My stylist sees your picture every 4 months! Even though my hair grows fast, I haven’t been able to “pull the trigger” on bangs yet/again. We get HOT in Texas and I want to go shorter. Any advice for working through hairstyle differences with the hubby? He remembers the l o n g hair from our teen years (high school sweethearts married 15 years – now in our late 50’s) but mine is SO thick, hot, and time-consuming I want to go a bit shorter. I want to respect his preferences but he hasn’t learned how to blow dry/flat iron either……………!! Sigh………….

  8. My hair is very similar to yours. I tried the velcro rollers, and they work SO WELL!! Thanks for sharing! I do have a hard time with my bangs. I watched that video too, and am going to try it your way. Do you do it the same way now that your hair is longer?

  9. Love your hair – I too love love hair products!! do you use hairspray? what brand do you like? Thank you!

    1. I do use hairspray. I use Tressemme most of the time but I’m looking for something that gets a better rating ( too many chemicals).
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

        1. I use Kendra also & love it . Alittle expensive but Ulta has an app you can use for coupon & you use less since it holds great & only spritz in short bursts all over.

  10. can you tell me how you did your hair when it was shorter, back in December? That is the cut I’m going for but my front does not look enough like yours.

    Thank you!

    1. I used a flat iron on my whole head when it was that short. It didn’t take long but it did do more damage.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  11. Cyndi, man does your hair grow fast! I love the cut but in wondering how often you get your bangs cut? Also, do you know what brand color your stylist uses is it also Goldwell? You look so great with short or long hair! 🙂

  12. Your hair is beautiful – long or short! Hey, if you blow dry your hair in 5 minutes, I HAVE to know the brand of blow dryer you have!

  13. I haven’t noticed how much it has grown out until you posted the 2014 pic. Are all the of the products you mentioned from the salon or are any of them from, say Ulta. My hair is so thick and I have trouble maintaining height on these hot KY summers we have.

  14. Thank you for the posts. I will try the Velcro rollers. Haven’t used Velcro rollers since the 80’s (oops showing my age!!) I love the blue top. Is it a Stitch Fix? Wish there was a Stitch Fix for plus size women.

    1. Debra,

Stitch Fix is always starting new box options – they just did maternity and I’ve heard plus size is in the works! Try emailing them!

      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  15. Hi Cyndi

I love your hair and a big yes to the length! If hair is healthy, well cared for and suites one, then why not celebrate longer hair – gone are the days of shorter hair for us ladies in their 40’s. xx

  16. Cyndi, I think your hair is beautiful either way but have to admit, you look ten years younger in the shorter version.. That said, it’s you hair and enjoy it the way you want to,

  17. I LOVE your longer hair! And count your blessings–my straight hair would barely curl with 15 minutes of hot rollers!!!

  18. I might have to give the Velcro rollers a try! I’m a big fan of hot rollers but the Velcro might be a nice change of pace just to add a little volume.

  19. I have grey coming in a lot on the sides at the temples & patches here and there. I do love your hair also. Was wondering if your hair dresser mixes the two colors together or does she put the darker color underneath and the light on top? Or do you have high lights on top?

  20. I also use pureology and I like the leave in conditioner. I have my hair colored every 4 to 5 weeks. I have a co- worker who keeps asking when I am going to stop coloring my hair. It is starting to bother me and hurts my feelings because if I didn’t I would be all gray. I am 49 and feel like it is okay to continue coloring. Please tell me how you would handle her comments?

    1. Oh my goodness – your coworker is obviously just jealous! Keep colouring your hair as long as you like! You are still young. I just turned 50 a few months ago and don’t really know anyone over 40 who doesn’t color their hair. Do your best to totally ignore her comments or say something like “I’m not sure what you mean – why?”. But you owe her no explanations. (What I can say, though, is that often we have to be willing to change our color as we age as our skin tone can change too.)
Thank you Cyndi, for your verses today. So in line of what I have been thinking about lately with some items that have been on the news and the way things/money are so revered, as are the people that have them.

    2. I’m all about grace but do not mess with me when it comes to coloring my hair! Ha!! Just kidding.
Ellen, I would ignore her, it’s your hair and if you want to color it, there’s nothing wrong with that. Choose Joy!
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

      1. I agree! I’m 47 and have alot of gray so I color (natural brunette) every 4 weeks! I “will not” let anyone see my gray yet!!!

    3. Ellen,
I would straight up tell her that her comments are hurtful, and you would appreciate it if she would not ask you about it anymore. I know that’s a hard thing to do, but I would certainly try! I agree with Nola – I imagine she is just jealous.
If that doesn’t work, I might have to get a little “nasty nice” and tell her it’s none of her business!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

      1. I turned 51 a few months ago and haven’t colored my hair for about 4 years now. I have a lot of gray and I get asked at work all the time why I don’t color my hair and how it would make me look “so much younger”. You certainly can’t please everyone and as its a personal choice for all of us, I don’t understand how anyone thinks it’s any of their business. It makes me feel bad also, do I look old but guess what I am getting older and there is no point in hiding it. I love your blog and your hair is gorgeous. Thank you!

        1. I’m 42 and stopped coloring my hair a year ago. I have lots of gray/white and am fine with that. My hair grows so fast that I always had roots within 2 weeks, so it’s not like I was fooling anyone anyway.

I don’t care whether someone colors their hair or not. People need to do whatever works for them. I do find it funny that many people seem to think looking younger should be everyone’s goal. I’m sure I look older with my grays but I have a cute hair cut and do my best to dress well. Gray hair is easier to pull off when the whole package looks put together, if that makes sense. But people can think whatever they want about my hair because my husband loves my grays. LOL

Cyndi, you have beautiful hair that looks great at both lengths. 🙂

    4. Hi Ellen,
If you are happy with your hair, just do as Taylor Swift says, “Shake it off.” If not, you could try a few different strategies. One thing I like to do is have my stylist add a few highlights (maybe 5 or so) on the top, because it breaks up the all over color and looks more natural. Also, if you can get away with it (depending on the coverage you want) demi-permanent color looks more natural than permanent color, at least for my hair. You could also do a root touch up, add a few highlights on top, and put demi on the rest of your hair-you can ask your stylist if that would work for you. I’ve been coloring my hair for over a decade. Don’t know if any of this is helpful but just wanted to share what I’ve learned through the years of good and not so good coloring experiences.

    1. Shelley I bought my rollers at CVS Pharmacy. I threw the packaging away so I don’t remember the brand. There may be better brands but mine work fine.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  21. You always look good, and you had the best bob I’ve ever seen …however, I like it long on you. It makes you look more youthful

  22. What do the rollers do that blow drying alone does not do? I would think that using rollers on dry hair would do nothing.
Your blog has been a help to me. I am more fashion conscious now than I used to be.

    1. Have you ever tried velcro rollers Sylvia?? They actually do a lot! My hair doesn’t look very good after I blow dry it. It needs rollers or a flat iron.
      Hope that helps!!
      Cyndi

  23. Thanks for this post! I noticed that you seem to wash your hair every day. I like to, too, even though a lot of people recommend not to… I just feel better with it washed! Just out of curiosity, how long does it take you to blowdry, and do you blowdry in layers, upside down, etc.?
    Thanks! Have a blessed day!
    “The Busy Brunette”
    http://thebusybrunette.blogspot.com/

    1. I do wash my hair everyday. Every once in a while I don’t but not often. I know it’s better not to but I don’t feel as good when it’s not washed.
It takes me about 5 minutes to blow dry my hair. I use a round brush and I do blow dry it upside down too.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  24. I knew I liked it longer & now, after seeing both pictures, I love it! It looks soft & fresh. Can’t wait to start doing different things with it. You’ll have so much fun & versatility.?

      1. blessings for finding this blog! Your style is amazing, the cut is to die for, would you be willing to share your stylists name? I’ve been to four stylist to cut a basic Bob and angle and they cannot get it! Your stylist gets it! I have been praying to God to find someone who knows how to cut angles like yours! if you don’t feel comfortable and releasing the name, could you give like the dimensions of inches on your sides back and Crown to help us folks out here? LOL God bless you

  25. Your hair looks great either way 🙂 As someone else said very few can wear short or long & look great…you can!
    Have a blessed day

  26. I just started using Velco rollers the last couple of months, following the exact same process as you Cyndi. I was surprised how well it worked while not damaging my hair. I also leave my rollers in about 15 minutes. My hair is fine and it still works great. I would be interested to know the length of your top layers and bangs. Appreciate the Beauty for the Heart today and always.

  27. Great post! I love reading your blog!
I’m trying to grow my hair, too. It is hard for me to do, though. Your post was very encouraging. I love getting new ideas of products to try as I have a drawer full and can always use more. 😉
    Have a blessed day!
    Beverly

  28. Hi Cyndi. Your hair looks great this length as well as shorter. My question is how did all the hair products you shared today score in the ” think dirty” app? And how do we really know if that app is reputable? Who controls how all these products are scored? 😉 have a blessed day. Thx for always sharing your finds with us!

  29. Love your hair and it is so encouraging to me to see your growth since December! I had a bad (like really bad) hair cut recently and am very anxious for it to grow out as quickly as possible. Thanks for the product suggestions too! As a TX girl, I love volume! 🙂

    1. Rachel,
I had a horrible, truly incompetent, haul cut at the end of February. The first day, I had to return to work, I could hardly look at myself in the mirror. So be encouraged, it will grow out and quicker than you think.
But I do not intend to get another haircut until next August, until right before school starts back. And I think I will never again, give a new place a try.
      So you aren’t alone:-)

  30. I love your Beauty for the Heart post today! It seems we see more and more of these things. God’s Word is so relevant for today and always! Thanks for your tips, always spot on for this 40 something woman!

  31. I updated my post and shared how long I leave my velcro rollers in. 🙂

I put them in after I blow dry my hair. I leave them in while I’m putting on my makeup, around 15 minutes.

  32. Love your hair either way and it’s always good to have options…..I went through that for several years but I am now back to shorter…..going to try some of those products though so thanks for sharing.

    1. Hey Julie,
I still have Aquage and I use it occasionally. I have a lot of body in my hair and I sometimes think I over use it. But if you want some lift it’s a great product!!!
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  33. You always look so cute!! … Question..about how long do you leave the Velcro rollars in? is your hair completely dry before you roll it?
    It looks great.

    1. I put them in after I blow dry my hair (my hair is completely dry). I leave them in while I’m putting on my makeup, around 15 minutes.

  34. After you put the Velcro rollers how long do you leave them in for? Do you use the blow dryer on them to set with heat?

    1. I put them in after I blow dry my hair. I leave them in while I’m putting on my makeup, around 15 minutes.
Sometimes I blow dry them to set but I don’t have to, they add enough body on their own.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  35. I think your hair looks great both ways. How long do you leave the Velcro rollers in? Do you do it in the morning or at night before you got to bed? I think that’s a great idea! I may have to purchase some

    1. I put them in after I blow dry my hair in the morning. I leave them in while I’m putting on my makeup, around 15 minutes.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  36. You were a “shampoo every day” girl, right? Still? So blow dry and then do the rollers? About how long do you find you need to leave them in?

    Thanks for this post.

    1. Yes I still shampoo most days. I put them in after I blow dry my hair. I leave them in while I’m putting on my makeup, around 15 minutes.
      Blessings,
      Cyndi
