Summer Trends-Off The Shoulder Top

Happy Memorial Day friends! I’m so thankful for the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces. They sacrificed so we can enjoy our freedoms and we are blessed to live in America. Amen?

We don’t have a lot of plans today so I’m going to do some shopping. I’ve been checking out some summer trends and one of my favorites right now are off the shoulder tops.

Summer Trends-Off The Shoulder Top

I have said this before, shoulders are one of the last places on our bodies to age so I think we can wear these as long as we don’t wear them too low. They are a great summer trend!

Here are some off the shoulder tops I found online.

What do you think about the off the shoulder summer trend?

I’d love for you to subscribe to my blog through email. You can also follow me on social media. I’m on FacebookInstagram and Pinterest!

Beauty for the Heart~~Since we are thinking about the sacrifices of our military and their families, I can’t help but think about the greatest sacrifice, Jesus. His sacrifice was for the whole world.

So also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him. Hebrews 9:28

Have a blessed day!

  1. Ladies, I’m going to close the comments on this post. We all have opinions on what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. I certainly appreciate what has been said but I don’t want this post to be a discussion on pornography. I might do a post on this but I want to pray about if first.
My prayer is that we will clothe ourselves with this, “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Colossians 3:12
    Thank you for stopping by!!
    Blessings, Cyndi

  2. I love this trend! I’ve already ordered the black one from WHBM. I plan on wearing it with white jeans, heels, and Kendra Scott jewelry. This will be great for a dinner out while on vacation. The great thing about these tops is that showing a little shoulder is usually an option.

  3. I love the off the shoulder look especially with a cute crop pants. Love item 4.

  4. FYI — Today on GMA, the fashion edition had that pantyhose are the trend. Stars, royals (Kate Middleton), etc. are all wearing them. They are on the runways this season.

  5. Just can’t see the point in off the shoulder especially at “our age”. I think it screams “hey, look at me”. It doesn’t seem comfortable and you’d have to wear a strapless bra. Give me a tank or sleeveless any time!

  6. While I really like the off the shoulder look. It bothers my 10 year old son. He will walk over and pull my shirt back on my shoulder even on a shirt that is just out of place.

  7. While I think the look is pretty, I feel it should be for the privacy of my own home. My husband has struggled for over 40 years with an addiction to pornography, and he is sensitive to how girls/women dress. What may be pretty to us can be perceived as sexy to boys/men. Because of what my husband has dealt with, it has made me sensitive to how I dress in public. It has also caused me to teach my three sons to value purity of eyes, mind, and heart from a young age and to avert their eyes when too much skin is exposed. My daughter dated a young man who told her that bare shoulders were a problem for him to see. So for me, this trend is a big no. However, I respect others’ choices…I just wanted to give you all something to consider before you invest in this trend.

    1. I have sons who also struggle with pornography and I totally agree with your comment!!

      1. My heart hurts for you…I understand the devastation of this addiction and how hard it is to break. I dread the warmer months knowing that more skin is exposed. I don’t think all girls/women are intentionally trying to get the attention of boys/men…they just don’t realize that what is on trend and pretty to them can be a problem for men/boys who struggle. Even though I don’t know you by name, I will pray for you and your sons…God knows all the details, and we’ll leave the healing to Him! ?

        1. So many thought-provoking comments on this thread which bear our consideration.

          This Scripture comes to mind:
          2 Corinthians 6:3
“We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.”

Beyond and above cute fashion and what is on trend is our responsibility as Christians to not put stumbling blocks on others’ paths. May we build one another up in love always.

  8. I’m 53, 5’6″, 125 pounds and live in Dallas (to put it into perspective). I think they are cute, age appropriate and Christian appropriate. If a lady doesn’t feel it’s appropriate for her, then she shouldn’t wear it. I can’t wait to see you post pictures of how you style yours.

  9. Well, I’m so yesterday… late catching the post… I love the off-shoulder look on the right woman. I think Cyndi could wear a green garbage bag and twist tie and look gorgeous… Really, don’t y’all think it’s more about the body shape, size and individual woman as to how one can pull this look off… I’ve seen 50 year old women strong, firm and youthful enough to do this, along with some 38 year old women who should pass on the look regardless of their age… love your posts and ideas… you are a trend setter !

  10. Not sure those of us in the over 40 category can get away with this without looking like Mrs. Roper from Three’s Company. I can see maybe as a one-time thing for a vacation dinner w/ my husband but not any other time. A big concern would be spending all of my time adjusting things so nothing accidentally hangs out and definitely wouldn’t be interacting with children while wearing lest someone grabs me and boom! I think we can dress our age, look cute and avoid certain trends.

  11. Earlier, you asked about our “dos and don’ts” for fashion. This is one of my personal “don’ts”. I’m not saying it’s a don’t for everyone but it is for me.

  12. I pray for those families who have lost someone in service to our country. Our culture has made Memorial Day into just another day of bbqs and department store sales.

    1. Mary I’m not sure what you mean, but I think you want to hear my opinion?? I love the tops, I’m not sure I would wear them at 60 but at 48, I would wear an off the shoulder top. I would wear it on vacation, to a family get together or a date night with my husband.
I think they’re cute and fun!!
      Blessings,
      Cyndi

  13. I really like the first two, but my boobs are too big for strapless bras – they just don’t ever work for me, so this is yet another style I have to pass by.

  14. I may be the odd one out, but I think shoulders are beautiful, especially if you work out and have pretty shoulders. I live in Florida and we may be a little more comfortable with skin. This would be great with shorts and wedges for an evening outdoor activity or dinner. I agree strapless for me, short periods of time only, not all day. I am 47, Christian, but don’t feel that shoulders are inappropriate at our age.

  15. Hmm, not for me. Personally I would feel uncomfortable wearing something like that, but that’s just me

  16. For me, off the shoulder always makes my shoulders look too wide. In fact even crew necks feel like that at times so I prefer v neck or scoop. The question of a comfortable bra to wear with something like that also comes up. The Bloomingdales one is adorable though.

  17. I think the tops are cute for the younger folks! I don’t think 40+ should wear them. I think it says “look at me, I trying to look 25” and I definitely wouldn’t want that. I’ve learned that not all trends are going to work for us. Some things are better left to the younger ones. I agree about the strapless bra comments! I haven’t found one yet, that I didn’t want to throw in the garbage! Maybe you can enlighten us on some strapless bra solutions.

  18. I’m not a fan of these tops on anyone, young or old. They are kind of shapeless and look like you’re wearing a bag. The blue, one shoulder top isn’t bad though. It has more shape to it.

  19. no joy here either. the idea of spending much time in a strapless bra would be a total no no.

  20. Hmmm…..not really a fan of the off shoulder tops for anyone over 50….. 🙂

  21. even though I like my shoulders, this trend scream “young women only” to me.

  22. Hmm. I’m just not feeling this for me. If I’m going to err, it’s going to be on the side of modesty. I think bare shoulders are very alluring to men. And I’m not trying to lure any man other than mine! I’m afraid sleevless is as far as I’m going in public.

    1. I agree! I am pretty sure my husband would not want me to wear this in public. He’s often said that what ladies think of as just “cute” can be a big distraction for men who are trying to keep their eyes/minds pure. Completely bare up there is in my mind a distraction (it IS different from just sleeveless). If it is sexy to your husband, chances are it is to other men also!

      1. Kay, that is exactly my point of view, too. It isn’t a matter of age, but being aware of how clothing affects others. We ladies tend to dress for our friends, but the truth is, more than our friends will be seeing us. On a similar subject, the “trend” may be for a deep v neckline. When I was younger, I was less busty and could wear that and not show cleavage. Now, I am much larger up top, and the v necks must be higher up. So, what is totally fine for one figure may not be appropriate for another.

      2. Danielle, you raise an interesting question, being as Christian ladies should we ever attempt to be sexy? Not pretty, sexy- there is a difference.
To me bare shoulders, short skirts, and plunging necklines are sexy.
To be honest, I am torn, but your comment has made me think.
        Thank you!

  23. Hummm…I definitely don’t want to give these tops the “cold shoulder” altogether, (pun intended, but…although the younger ladies can pull it off, discretion is key for 50+ women…beachy vacations or special occasions. I think for everyday wear on us 50+ gals it might look as though we’re trying too hard to be sexy, which is not a message I’m comfortable with. As a classy married woman, Mom/Grammy, and more importantly, a Christian this is my “golden rule” in the world of fashion: If it’s too low, too short, too tight or too questionable, leave it on the rack and make a wiser choice!

Saying thank you to our brave men and women who have and are serving to protect our freedom!

    1. I agree with your “golden rule”, Nancy! And, by the way, the “cold shoulder” tops I mentioned in a comment farther down are tops with the sleeves split open at the shoulder to about 3/4 the way down the sleeves.

  24. However pretty, not so much for me.
Thank you to all the service men and women!

  25. Not so sure about the off the shoulder tops. I do really like the cut out shoulder tops though. Personally, I think it’s more attractive for a woman of my age, 52.

    1. For anyone wanting a hint of the trend but not feeling comfortable with the whole off-the-shoulder look, google Jaclyn Smith Women’s Cold Shoulder Top. That will take you to K-Mart’s site and a sale on those tops. And, hey, one of Charlie’s Angels wouldn’t steer us wrong, right? ? (Those of us who are of a “certain age” remember her!)

  26. It can be an extremely attractive look, but at 65 not for me. I’d also wonder how it would look on someone 5’3″.

  27. Hi Cydi! HHhhmmmmm, I’m not sure what I think. I do like some of the tops you showed but I think like you said, not too low. I’m also thinking, it depends on a lot of things..like body type, occasion, etc. You look good always! Have fun shopping!

  28. Well, looks like I’m the minority, I think this trend is for the younger crowd.

    1. I totally agree…my 30 year old daughter would look amazing in any of these tops…me, not at all!

  29. Love this new trend that doesn’t require you to be too thin. I wonder if this look would work for a graduation ceremony. My son his graduating pre-kindergarten on Friday and I need a trendy sophisticated look. All the moms in his class are much younger so I feel the need to look trendy. Any ideas? Yes, we were late to have kids but we wouldn’t change a thing. It was just how God planned for us.

  30. Amen!!!
Do like the off the shoulder too! Don’t wear it though!:) thinking of our veterans today and am so thankful for their service!!

  31. Love the look, but being a D cup bra size becomes a challenge for a strapless bra AND I have almost permanent groove/indents in my shoulders from regular bras – not so pretty ?
Look forward to seeing on you

    1. I have the same issue. I like the look (but not for me @ 58) and strapless bras at my size (42D) are not comfortable at all so will steer clear of this trend. I do own one cold shoulder top, now 4 years old, but still classic enough to wear. I like it and the part of shoulder/arm that is exposed still looks ok so I can get away with that :).

    2. They are cute, but I totally relate–I have the same issues with the bra and indents in my shoulders. Our small group has also been going through the books “For Men Only” and “For Women Only”. It really is amazing what the types of clothing we wear cause men to think.

  32. Hi Cyndi.

I love the look too! What are your thoughts on the tops with the shoulders cut out? I love these as well, and you can wear a regular bra with them. Are they out of style now? I hope not. LOL

Have a great day shopping. 🙂

    1. I think the tops with shoulders cut out are still in. I like that you can wear them with a bra too!
      Have a great week!
      Cyndi

  33. Love off the shoulder! Cute tops Cyndi. Can’t wait to see what all you find today! ?

  34. I love the look too Cyndi. Very feminine and a little ” sexy” 😉 Don’t love strapless bras like some of the other ladies. Love to hear your recommendation on that. 😉

  35. One more post…
I wore mine with a spaghetti strapped or tank-top blouse underneath to wear a reg bra under it. Of course this defeats the showing off the shoulders hee hee.

  36. Ahhh yes, the “off the shoulder” tops. This is another trend repeating itself… I loved these tops when I was a teen… 15-18 we wore all kinds of these blouses… I had a mixed colored sweater that hung over one shoulder, I had one blouse that I even stretched to go over the shoulders… hee hee and about 3-4 more that actually were meant to hang over the shoulders. 🙂 I’m not so sure that I will be wearing them again though seeing that I have a young daughter that loves them and wishes to dress younger then her mom!! But I will try and hunt one that is more my age appropriate, maybe let her pick it out for me… LOL cause I still love them, and I am 47.

  37. Cute tops, Cyndi! I have one off the shoulder top and love it… My only problem is that I’m well endowed and strapless bras are no fun… Have you tried any brands/styles that you like? Blessings!! Krista
