{Day 15} Our Neck: Fashion & Beauty For Women Over 40

We’re almost half way through our 31 days of Fashion & Beauty For Women Over 40. We’re working our way from our head all the way to our feet. We’ve finally made it to our neck!

The neck seem’s to always give away a person’s age and if I’m totally honest, my neck has started aging, and it bothers me a little. The horizontal wrinkles are the first wrinkles that begin to appear, usually in your forties. I’m there!

By the time you hit your sixties, many women have extra skin under their chin, giving them a double chin.

What can we do? Fortunately we can reclaim our necks with more flattering necklines and accessories, says Christopher Hopkins, The Makeover Guy.

If you have……….a short neck, a thick neck, and/or a double chin:

  • Choose a V-neck. It’s the be all, end all, most slenderizing neckline around.
  • Avoid a turtleneck like the plague, esp. if you have a double chin.
  • Never wear a choker (even though they’re in right now, steer clear of them).
  • Avoid chunky neckwear.
  • Avoid stiff scarves. If you wear a scarf tie them vertically.
  • Choose necklaces that create a V, such as a pendant.
  • Avoid round button earrings; opt for medium to long vertical dangles.
  • Choose a soft collar that lies flat.

If you have………a long thin neck:

  • Wear turtlenecks. It’s great alone or as a layer
  • Turn up your collar.
  • Button-down collars ride up higher and are flattering.
  • The choker is your friend.
  • A short stiff scarf is excellent for you. You can wear scarves closely tied around your neck.
  • Wear chunky jewelry.

The picture on the left is for women with short, thick necks. This is the way to wear a scarf vertically. The picture on the right is for women with long thin necks.

How to help with wrinkles on your neck:

Wear sunscreen! ( I got too much sun on my neck when I was younger.)

Use a firming cream specifically for your neck and moisturize your neck.

Here’s something you can do that’s inexpensive {source}: You can get instant smoothing results by applying whipped egg white to the neck. Whip one egg white in a cup and apply with fingertips to the throat and neck areas. Apply the egg white liberally, smoothing it on with a tissue. Allow the egg white to dry—you should see a visible difference in your neckline appearance. If a white residue remains, cover it up with powder or makeup base.

{Day 3} Hair Color: Fashion & Beauty For Women Over 40

Here we are, Day 3 and we’re talking–Hair Color.

Um…I have lots of personal experience with this one! I’ve been coloring (or having my hair colored) for at least 10 years. Hair color can make you look years younger especially if you’re covering gray hair.

First, lets talk about NOT covering your gray hair. Some women have gorgeous gray hair and look very classy. But Charla Krupp writes this in her book, How Not To Look Old, “Before you join the sisterhood of silver foxes, know that although silver hair can look cool, it will never look young. Truthfully, it adds ten years.”

So, its up to each woman to make that call. I can’t ever imagine having plastic surgery or botox but I will color my gray! :-)

Second, you don’t want to do an extreme color change because it can damage your hair. It can cause breakage, which will not give you a healthy, glossy, young look. Of course, I learned this one the hard way! See this blond streak? It caused a lot of damage to that area of my hair.

Quoting Charla Krupp, “Crazy color changes are better left to teens in their experimental stage. At your stage, you want to look elegant, classy, and, well, sane.”

Ouch! I wish I had read this book before I went through that mid life crisis!

What are we looking for as women over 40? We want fabulous hair color that’s bright and bold. We want to add highlights around our face and darker toward the back.

Dark brunettes will look beautiful with lighter highlights and Blondes should not go darker than when they were a kid.

Be seasonal: In the summer you should be at your lightest and brightest, so add more highlights. In the winter, you should be darker and warmer.Use highlights more sparingly and make sure they’re in warmer tones too.

As you age you should always lighten your hair, right? Not true. With hair color there are no absolutes. If you like your dark hair, it just might be perfect for you even beyond sixty. Just make sure it’s not a black-blue!

I had this head shot taken this past weekend at the Bloggy Conference thanks to Angie from 2 sisters and a blog. This is my hair color right now. My stylist uses two different colors by Paul Mitchell.

You don’t have to go to a salon to have your color done. Here are some good products you can use at home.

  • Clairol Natural Instincts
  • Clairol Nice ‘n Easy Gray Solution
  • Garnier Nutrisse
  • L’Oreal Paris Superior Preference

31 Days Of Fashion & Beauty For Women Over 40

Okay, here we are at the beginning of October! I’m so excited to begin this series-31 days of Fashion & Beauty For Women Over 40.

I’m guessing that a lot of you are like me and asking the same question, “How in the world did I get here?” It was just yesterday that I had my first pimple!

Of course everyday when I get up and look in the mirror, I realize I’m not 16, or 26, or 36…..I’m 46! I don’t know about you but I’m noticing age spots, crow’s-feet, gray hair, spider veins, gravity issues everywhere (to put it nicely), and the list goes on.

So, over the next month we’re going to look at ways we can look younger, thinner and feel better. We are NOT over the hill! Remember 40s the new 20, 50s the new 30 and 60s the new 40. Works for me!

We’re going to start at the top of our body, the head, and work our way down. I’ll be sharing some to-do tips and some not-to-do tips. Believe me, I have a lot to learn too and I can’t wait to get started!

Tomorrow we’ll talk Hair. What looks good, and what makes us look younger.

To get us started, I’ll leave you with “things that shouldn’t be seen on anyone who has left her twenties”: (This is not my list but is from the book, How Not To Look Old by Charla Krupp.) In my opinion I think it should be more like anyone who has left her thirties:

  • A dead-middle part with straight hair, no layers
  • High ponytail
  • Braids
  • Beaded braids
  • Thick, structured headbands
  • Ribbons
  • Kiddie barrettes
  • Glitter
  • Hair accessories that could be mistaken for toys or charms
  • Scrunchies

**I’m using two books as resources, How Not To Look Old by Charla Krupp and Staging Your Comeback by Christopher Hopkins.
