God’s Faithfulness In Our Struggles

For quite a while, I’ve wanted to share about the struggles our family has been going through over the last 5 months. I would sit down to begin typing and the words would not flow.

But this week, I heard a song that said what I’ve been wanting to say. If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know I enjoy sharing songs that I love.

When Wayne and I married in 1991 we had a lot of songs sung at our wedding (Wayne has a bachelor’s degree in vocal music). One of the songs was, I Will Be Here by Steven Curtis Chapman.

It was a perfect song for us as we were beginning our life together. The last verse says this,

And just as sure as seasons are made for change
Our lifetimes are made for years
So I… I will be here
We’ll be together
I will be here

So here we are 22 years later. We’ve had our ups and downs. We’ve watched our children grow up, we’ve dealt with cancer, we’ve lost my Mom to cancer and the list could go on. We’ve been through life!

But last fall, was definitely one of the most difficult seasons for our family.

Our daughter Courtney had grown up wanting to be married and to have children. But she also knew that having a career was important. Her desire was to stay home with her children when they were small.

Courtney graduated from Georgetown College with an elementary education degree and waited on God’s timing for finding her future mate.

She began working as a teacher and in 2009 she met her future husband. They dated for a year and in June 2010 they were married.

Six months into their marriage Courtney became pregnant and on September 2, 2011, Colt Allen Rogers was born. He has been such a blessing to our family!

Last June Courtney and her husband celebrated their 3 year anniversary. We knew they were having some struggles but we also knew the first few years of marriage can be hard.

Unfortunately, in September, Courtney found out her husband was being unfaithful and he decided to leave and did not want to reconcile. As you can imagine we were all devastated.

This is not the life that Courtney would have chosen. (I’m divorced and Courtney and Cory know the difficulties that go along with divorce). She wanted more than anything for her marriage to work out but it’s not a possibility.

Courtney and Colt moved in with us last October. As many of you know Wayne and I had 2 foreign exchange students living with us.

Because of the pain our family was going through we knew we couldn’t keep Camille and Nikki. Thankfully, some wonderful friends from church took the girls so we get to see them often. God was faithful!

Although it hasn’t been easy, Courtney and Colt are doing much better! She has a wonderful job and we know that God has a plan for their life and it is full of hope.

When I heard the song, Together by Steven Curtis Chapman, I knew I wanted to share it with you all. I decided to add pictures of our family over the last few years. All the pictures in the video are of Wayne, Courtney, Cory, Colt and myself and I added one with Camille and Nikki.

We are a family, a family that can testify to God’s grace and mercy!

I’m sure your family has not been immune to struggles. Have you seen God’s hand at work in your family?

Have a blessed day!

A Little Weekend Recap!

Good morning friends! Well, my whirlwind week has finally ended! I’m home from the Haven conference and I’ll share more about that later in the week.

I got home yesterday afternoon and we headed to Dad and Janet’s for dinner. It was my birthday and they had party for me! Yay! Colt helped me blow out my candles. Thankfully, they did not put the number of candles for my age on the cake!

Blowing out the cake

The weather was incredible, 78 degrees and so we headed outside to take some family picture. I wanted one with Wayne, Courtney, Cory and I. It’s been a while since it’s just been the four of us. But if you notice, we got photo bombed my Colt Allen!! I wish you could hear him, he’s down they’re saying “cheese”.

Family picture

Now a picture of the WHOLE family. See that sweet young girl in the middle? That’s Camille, from Paris, France. She’ll be living with us for the entire school year. Next week, Nikki will be here, so I’m going to have to get a new family picture! :-)

Family Picture with Camille

We are so thankful to have Camille with us! Wednesday is back to school for us so we have a lot to do between now and Wednesday.

Me and Camille

Courtney jumped on Chris’ back so I snapped a quick picture.

Of course, Cory had to photo bomb that sweet moment. I can’t tell you how hard we laughed at this picture! Cory is really wanting to make sure he looks good in the photo bomb! That boy makes me laugh so hard!!

Lastly, I snapped a quick picture with Dad and Janet. They are so precious and made my birthday extra special!
Dad and Janet Colt wanted to play with “Miss Janet’s” camera. This is how he took pictures.

This is what he looked like when we finally took the camera away from him.

Colt crying

Oh boy, he was getting tired at this point!

I hope you don’t mind the overload of pictures. Some of you have asked if I would share some more about our family so you got that today!

Lastly, I drove to Atlanta by myself so it was over 5 hours of alone time. Pandora + praise and worship! I listened to so many wonderful songs and tears may or may not have been shed several times. :-)

I’ll end with this song by Selah today since I didn’t get to share any yesterday. This. song. is. amazing!

Have a blessed day!

Back To Reality!

Well, we are back from vacation and it’s time to get back to reality! We had a blast, but it’s true, there’s no place like home!

I’m ready to get back to some fashion & beauty posts. But today I’m going to spend a lot of time answering emails and catching up. So I thought I’d share a few pictures with you today. I hope you don’t mind!

Wayne and I spent some time at Lake Michigan, which actually looks like a beach except there’s no sharks. Yay!

We ate some delicious food!

We stayed at a retreat called, The Lodge along with two other pastors and their wives. We had so much fun together and I was blessed to get to know these two ladies.

My Weekend + June Birchbox

Good morning! We had a busy weekend! My sister, Traci got home from Nicaragua last night and we met her at the airport to welcome her home. I was so glad to see her!

This is Colt waiting for Aunt Traci to get off of her plane. Eli, Traci’s youngest son has his arm around Colt. So sweet!

We also had a wedding of a dear friend to attend on Saturday night. It was gorgeous! Wayne couldn’t go to the wedding so Cory, my son, was my date for the evening.

Every chance this mama gets to spend with her son is a blessing! One of these days he’s going to meet a young lady that’s going to capture his heart. I’ve been praying for her from the time Cory was born and I can’t wait to meet her!

I”ve mentioned  Birchbox before, but it’s a monthly subscription service ($10 a month)  of high-end beauty, grooming, and lifestyle samples that have been customized for you.

{Day 21} Beauty for the Heart: Blessings

The first Sunday of October I shared about passing on our faith. Last Sunday, we realized that life is short and today I want to share with you what my Mom taught me about looking for blessings.

Psalm 67:1-2 says, May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us.

My Mom looked for ways God was blessing her even in the midst of having terminal cancer.

To share with you how Mom looked for blessings, this picture was taken the day we found out Mom had stage 4 gastric cancer. Mom asked someone to take this picture of us. At the time, a picture was the last thing I was in the mood for, but now I’m so glad I have it!

After we left Mom’s doctors appointment my brother, and sister and I took Mom to lunch. Then my sister and I took Mom to Lifeway Bookstore so she could get some thank you cards to send to people.

After we got home, Mom said, “This has been the best day! I had so much fun!”

I quickly replied, “Mom you just found out you have stage 4 gastric cancer. Not the best day!”  We laughed, but Mom looked for the blessings.

Over the next 7 weeks of her life, Mom found blessings everywhere. Cards from friends and loved ones were blessings. The sun shining was a blessing. When people brought food for us to eat that was a blessing.

Everyday Mom found something that caused her to see blessings. I can’t begin to tell you how that has changed my life. And not just mine, but our whole family.

We cherish the moments we’re together more than ever! Just yesterday, we spent time as a family at the pumpkin patch. My sweet Daddy and Janet had been planning this for weeks and Dad was so excited for us to spend some quality time together. And I’m reminded that that is a blessing!

And in case you’ve never met this little blessing, (and if you’ve been reading my blog for long you know I’m CRAZY over him) Colt Allen is our grandchild and my husband and I think he’s one of the best blessings the Lord has ever given us! :-)

So today, let me encourage you to start looking for the blessings because they are ALL AROUND YOU!

Do you ever look for blessings during difficult seasons of your life?

Life Is A Gift!

Today I’m looking back at the last few weeks and I’m reminded that life is a gift. James 1:17 says, Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Many of you reading my blog know that I lost my Mom in 2009. One of the things that Mom’s death taught me is that life is fragile and we shouldn’t take those that we love for granted.

Cherish your family; hug a little tighter, and embrace every moment!

Here’s some family time I’ve had over the last few weeks. You’ll notice a common theme, Colt Allen. :-)

My son opening his birthday cards. It’s a tradition in our family to read all the cards out loud. Some of the cards make us laugh and some of them make us cry.

This is a picture of my husband with Colt Allen and Eli (my sister’s youngest son). Twenty one years of marriage and I’m still madly in love!

Jonathan (my sister’s oldest son) with Colt Allen.

The boys! Love them so much!

Colt Allen with my brother, Blake. Blake’s the best brother a sister could ever have.

My sister-in-law Ande with her daughter (my niece) Kinsey.  Love these two so much!!

Courtney talking to Janet, my step-mom. She’s been such a blessing to our family!

Enjoying family time.

My sister stealing a kiss from Colt Allen.

My crazy brother-in-law (who I love to give a hard time!) and my sister.

My Dad, he’s the most amazing Dad and he’s our rock. We all adore him!!

We are not a perfect family, but we are family and we love each other. We have experienced a lot of life together and today I’m counting my blessings for each one of them.

What are you thankful for today?

Have a wonderful Sunday friends!
