My Everyday Makeup Routine

My Everyday Makeup Routine

I always get emails about makeup, what are you using, what’s your favorite brand, etc. I have to admit, I love change when it comes to makeup.

When I was younger I would stick to a certain brand like Clinique or Bobbi Brown and use all of their products. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized I can mix and match and use my favorite products from different brands.

Here is my everyday makeup routine right now.

I’m a huge fan of primers. Primers prep the skin prior to foundation and eyeshadow application. I use Cover Fx anti-aging face primer and Cover Fx anti-aging eye primer. I love that they both have anti-aging ingredients in them!

Next, I use Cover Fx natural finish oil free foundation ( I use the color P 50). It’s a water based liquid foundation that provides hydrating, flexible sheer-to-full coverage for the face.

I use Cover Fx matte setting powder to set my foundation and minimize shine.

For concealers, I start with Benefit’s lemon aid corrector. I use it on my lid and under my eye to cover up my dark circles. I follow that with NARS radiant creamy concealer. I use the color custard.

For my eyebrows, I will use different brown eyeshadows to fill them in. I’ve talked about the importance of filling in your eyebrows. You don’t want to draw a line. Right now I’m using Mac eyeshadow to fill in my eyebrows. The color is Brun.

Now for my eyes, I play with different eye shadows and right now I’m using the Urban Decay Naked Palette. It has a variety of neutral shades.

For my eyeliner I use Urban Decay 24/7 glide-on eye pencil. The color I use is demolition. I play with a lot of different mascaras and right now I’m using L’Oreal Double Extend.

For a hint of color on my cheeks I’m using Cover Fx Golden Peach bronzer. This gives me a hint of color without over doing it. They aren’t selling this anymore so when I’m out, I’ll have to find something different.

Lips, I try different lip colors all the time. I like a hint of gloss so right now I’m using L’Oreal Colour Riche LeGloss Lip Gloss, Nude Touch.

My Everyday Makeup Routine

I’ve been trying to save money and do my own nails. The nail polish I’m loving right now is Essie Nail Color – Mochachino 781. It has a hint of sparkle and it’s a great winter color.

Well, there you go! That’s what I’m using right now. Have you tried any of these products? Do you like to try different brands or do you stick with one?

How To Contour and Highlight Your Face

I love to experiment with makeup. I’m not a makeup artist but I’ve always wanted to be one. I could spend hours on the computer watching makeup videos. One of the things I’ve started doing in the last year is to contour and highlight my face.

Contouring and highlighting has been around a long time. What does it actually do? It helps sculpt your face to enhance your natural shadows and bone structure.

Here are the areas I contour and highlight (I do this after I’ve applied my foundation):

How to contour & Highlight your face

  • To slim your nose: apply a contouring shade on each side of your nose, blending carefully, and the highlighter down the center of your nose. (I just highlight my nose most of the time but contouring on each side will slim your nose.)
  • To enhance the cheekbones: suck in your cheeks, apply a darker shade to the hollows and a highlighter to the top of the cheekbones. Then apply blush as normal.
  • To contour the forehead: apply a light bronzer to each temple and blend upward. This will create a shadow effect causing the head to look more rounded. Highlight in the center above the brows.
  • For a small, thin chin: apply highlighter to the center of the chin, directly under the center of the lip.
  • To minimize a double chin which starts to happen as we age: apply bronzer along the jaw line and blend it down, towards your neck. This creates depth and helps to strengthen the jaw line.

Make sure you blend these in, you don’t want to walk around looking like my picture! :-)

Here are the products I use to contour and highlight: {Disclosure: Please know that if you make a purchase using a link on this page, I may earn a commission and I am very grateful for your support of this site. Thank you.}

I use Bahama Mama for contouring. It works great for most skin types.

For highlighting I use MAC Prep +Prime Highlighter.

Do you contour and highlight your face? Have you tried it?

Beauty for the Heart~~ I was reading in Psalms this week and came across this verse, Psalm 130:5a (NLT), I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. It reminded me of how my husband often prays those words this way, “God we are counting on you!”

What situation today are you counting on God? Tell him and he will listen!

Lips + Some Reminders

I love trying new lip color. I recently tried Covergirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Rose Twist.

Lips + Some Reminders
This balm is fortified with shea and mango butters and gives you a hint of color. It’s easy to apply and doesn’t have that sticky feeling you sometimes get with lipsticks.

They have several colors to choose from and I plan to get a couple more to wear this spring!

Now that winter is officially over and most of us are warming up, this is a great time to go through our makeup and get rid of what we’re not using.

I also like to get a makeover this time of the year at Sephora or Ulta or any of the makeup places in the mall. I like to change my foundation too!

Some reminders for women over 40:

Although each season brings new trends with makeup, most of them are not things that we need to wear.

Silver eyeshadow swiped all over your lid is a fashion trend this season, but not for us! This is too much for our age group.

Lips + Some Reminders

Remember we don’t need to over do our makeup on our eyes or lips. A natural look with a hint of color is best.

One thing I see a lot of older women doing is matching their eye shadow color to what they are wearing. This is a no-no and will definitely age you.

Although there are a lot of pretty eyeshadow colors we really need to stick with a shade of brown. Brown eye shadow is always current and appropriate. All you need to do is find the right shade of brown that works for you.

There are several shades of brown: warm brown (caramel, terracotta), neutral brown (chocolate, raisin), or cool brown (coffee, plum).

Keep your lipsticks light too! Dark lipsticks definitely age us.

Do you do anything different with your makeup in spring and summer? Do you ever get a makeover?

(Last year I did a whole series for women over 40 you can find it here.)

Help For Dark Circles

I’m always, always looking for products that will help with my dark circles. The older I get the more they seem to be showing up. Ugh!

I know there are things that can help such as sleep, drinking lot of water, eating healthy etc. but on those days that some of these things are lacking I need extra help. Lots of extra help!

I recently tried MAC’s Prep + Primer Highlighter in radiant rose. It’s a pen-style creamy highlighter that brings a sheer wash of color to the skin wherever it is applied. It can be used under makeup to prime and brighten, or on top of makeup to highlight.

Help For Dark Circles
This highlighter is thin and creamy, with a sheer pink tint. It’s buildable, so if you have very mild under-eye darkness, you might not need an additional concealer. If you do have severe darkness, like me, then this will work well when combined with your favorite concealer.

It blends very easily making the product undetectable. I apply it with MAC’s 224 Tapered Blending Eye Shadow Brush. I also apply my concealer with this brush and I love it!

Help for Dark Circles

(FYI, I wasn’t using the product in this picture but just showing you where I apply it.)

Do you struggle with dark circles? Have you tried any products lately that you love?

Beauty For the Heart~~Today is Maundy Thursday. Ever wonder what Maundy means? It’s derived from the Latin word mandatum, meaning “commandment”.

Maundy refers to the commands Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper: to love with humility by serving one another and to remember his sacrifice.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take this and eat it. This is my body.”

Then he took the cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. He said, “All of you drink from it.  This is my blood of the new covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many.

Here is what I tell you. From now on, I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it with you in my Father’s kingdom.” Matthew 26:26-29

Have a blessed day!

Over 40 Makeup-Cream Blush

Over 40 Makeup-Cream Blush
One of the things I’ve realized is that the makeup I wore in my 20s and 30s doesn’t always work now that I’m in my 40s. Cream blush is one of the things I’ve added to my makeup routine over the last several years.

When I first started using it, I wasn’t crazy about it. There’s something about using a big powder brush and swooping blush on my cheeks that makes me feel like a true makeup artist (which is what I’ve always wanted to be :-)).

The one thing I read over and over again is that as women over 40 we want to have a dewy look to our skin which=younger looking skin. So believe me I try to look dewy! I’ve seriously thought about keeping a squirt bottle with me and just misting my face all day. Haha!

Cream blush seems to give us a dewy look. It goes on smoothly and can be applied with your fingers, foundation brush or sponge.

To find the perfect color, pinch your cheeks and look at the tone, match your blush color to the color in your cheeks.

When applying cream blush apply the product to the apples of the cheeks and up toward the hairline, then down to soften the edges.

Here are some good ones you might want to try:

1. Mac Cremeblend blush-I use this and the color I use is Ladyblush.

2. Mary Kay Cream Blush

3. Bobbi Brown Cream Blush

4. Clinique Blushwear Cream Stick

 5. Maybelline New York Dream Bouncy Blush

I have used several of these cream blushes, but all of them have good reviews!

Have you tried any cream blushes? What’s your favorite blush?

Over 40 Makeup-Lipstick

Over 40 Makeup

I told you on Tuesday that I wanted to be a little more organized in my home life but also on my blog. So, I thought I’d dedicate Thursdays to makeup. Things like makeup tips, makeup I’m using, and makeup I like. Of course I’ll be gearing it towards women over 40.

Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite neutral lipsticks with you. It’s Bobbi Brown’s “Brown” lipstick. It’s a medium pink brown and I pair it with Mac’s “Pretty Plush” lip gloss.

Women over 40 should stick to neutral lipsticks which soften our face. I know all those trendy red, and hot pinks look fun but they will actually make you look older.

When choosing a neutral lip color, Bobbi Brown says, “never choose one that is lighter than your lips, because that will make you look washed-out”.

Bobbi Brown’s “brown” lipstick looks good on almost all women and is a great color to wear everyday.

I’m wearing the “Brown” lip color in this picture.

Do you have a great neutral lipstick that you wear? Please share it with us!

Beauty For the Heart~~One of the things that I believe makes a women beautiful are the words that come from her mouth. Maybe I’m old-fashioned but curse words and slander are not becoming in my opinion.

Ephesians 4:29 (NLT) says, Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Let’s be careful with our words and be an encouragement today! Have a blessed day!
