5 Tips For a Healthy Marriage

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d share 5 Tips For a Healthy Marriage. These are tips that Wayne and I believe in and use in our own marriage. Whatever stage of marriage you’re in, your marriage is important and you need to make it a priority!

5 tips for a healthy marriage

After 22 years of ministering along side my husband to couples and leading numerous conferences on marriage I have realized we all have to work at our marriages.

Wayne and I have certainly had struggles but one thing we both know is, we are committed to each other, period!

I love being married to Wayne and we both want the best marriage possible. So here are my 5 tips for a healthy marriage~~

1. Make Christ a Priority-The first thing we must do to keep our marriage healthy is to put Christ first. Many people today try to have a healthy marriage without Him but dare I say more than ever, we need Him.

I’m not talking about going to church every once in a while but I’m talking about a real relationship with the One who created marriage. (Genesis 2:20-25)

Wayne and I hold each other accountable and we encourage each other in our walk with Christ. This is the most important priority and ultimately the most fulfilling way to a strong marriage.

2. Pray together-Wayne and I regularly pray together. For some reason, some couples have a hard time praying together. But let me encourage you to try it. There’s something very intimate about praying together and it’s hard to be mad at each other when you’re praying for each other together. :-)

3. Laughter is good medicine-Marriage is hard and we sometimes disagree, but laughter has always been good medicine for our marriage. There are lots of serious issues in the world but taking a break from them and just finding time to belly laugh has been such a blessing in our marriage.

Today, maybe things are a little crazy around your house. Let me suggest laughter, it really does do a marriage good! “A joyful heart is good medicine” Proverbs 17:22

 4. Celebrate Your Differences-One thing we hear a lot of married couples say is “we have nothing in common”. I laugh as I write this because Wayne and I are complete opposites too.

I often feel like singing the theme song to Green Acres. You’ve heard it right?

{Wayne} Green acres is the place for me.
Farm livin’ is the life for me.
Land spreadin’ out so far and wide
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

{Cyndi} New York is where I’d rather stay.
I get allergic smelling hay.
I just adore a penthouse view.
Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

We laugh all the time about how different we are. But I think it makes are marriage interesting. Wayne and I give and take.

I go fishing with him (well I go, I don’t actually fish, I take a good book) and he goes shopping with me. It works for us!

So today, celebrate your differences rather than trying to change them. Then try to think of some things you do have in common.

5. Dream Together-Wayne and I love to talk about things we want to do together. Even things we want to do with our grown children. Dreaming keeps our marriage fresh and exciting! So take some time this week to dream together.

This is not an exhaustive list but these are 5 things that we believe has kept our marriage strong and healthy. Wayne and I will be married 23 years this year and we can both say we are more in love with each today than ever before.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

3 Valentine’s Day Outfits

Happy hump day! Valentine’s day is fast approaching and I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to wear (assuming my husband is taking me to dinner, which would be in his best interest!). I’ve picked out 3 Valentine’s day outfits that I might wear.

Of course I love to wear dresses and I found this graphic print dress at The Limited and I added a red necklace.

Since our weather has been dreary, I’m adding color to my outfits to make me feel better. I don’t think you have to wear red for Valentine’s day. Turquoise is one of my favorite colors.

I added brown pants and wedges and then another pop of color with my bracelet.

For a more casual date night, and I’m guessing this could be what I wear, I picked this casual green blouse and added a coral necklace.

The Limited was having a great sale. They had buy one blouse, get one free. They had lots of colors for spring!

Also many of you have asked about my gold toe shoes from Zappos. I bought them over a year ago, and they don’t have them anymore.

I’ve looked everywhere for another pair and I finally found one similar at ASOS. They’re a little pricey but I love mine and wear them all the time. I may order this pair because mine are starting to wear out a little.

You can go here to find them. If you know of anywhere else to purchase them please let us know! (Okay, these are out of stock. Sorry!! Hopefully they’ll have them soon.)

**Update on the gold toe flat, I found another pair on Amazon for $17.99, you can go here.

Are you doing anything special for Valentines Day? What will you be wearing?

Beauty For the Heart~~We were created for eternity. I love this quote from my Experiencing God Bible study:

“God did not create you for time; He created you for eternity. Time—your lifetime on earth—provides the opportunity for you to become acquainted with Him. It provides occasions for Him to develop your character into His likeness. Then eternity will hold its fullest dimensions for you.”

Have a blessed day!

I’m so Thankful He Chose Me!

As Valentine Day draws to a close I’m so thankful for my husband.

I remember our first Valentine’s Day…………..

We were young and giddy about each other.

But tonight as he sits next to me with his laptop open I realize, I’m still giddy.

We’ve been through so much together, we have history.

Wayne loves me when I look my worst…………

when I act my worst………..

He makes me laugh………….

He challenges me to love Christ more………….

To give more………….

and he reminds me daily how much he loves me.

What a blessing he is to me!!

And so tonight I’m so thankful…….

He chose me!

This song was sung at our wedding and it’s more “us”  today than it was twenty years ago :-)

Wanda’s Kitchen…..Delicious Caramel Corn

Wanda's Kitchen is a weekly post dedicated to my Mom. She was a contibuting foods editor to our local newsapaper and to HomeLife Magazine. Mom went to be with the Lord on September 22, 2009.

It’s Valentines weekend so why not make your family a sweet snack.

My sister-in-law made this a few months ago and I loved it (which is surprising because it’s not chocolate!).

Warning: it’s addicting and it’s hard to stop eating it!

Here’s all you need:

1 bag MIKE-SELLS Popcorn

2 sticks butter

1/4 cup Light Karo syrup

2 cups brown sugar

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. vanilla

Melt  butter, syrup and brown sugar on stove (stirring continually) and boil on medium high heat for 2 minutes. Add baking soda and vanilla. Stir and pour over popcorn(use large bowl). Turn onto 2 baking sheets and bake at 250 degrees for 45 minutes, turning every 15 minutes. Enjoy!!
