Healthy Living In Our 40′s And Beyond!

It’s hard for me to believe that I recently turned 48. Ouch! But one thing I’m trying to do is stay healthy. It’s not about being skinny, it’s about feeling my best. So today I thought we’d talk about healthy living in our 40′s and beyond.

The reason I thought we’d talk about our health is because of a picture I saw of myself in 2012. First, what the heck was I thinking with that pose! Let’s have a good laugh and move on.

Healthy Living In Our 40's And Beyond! I noticed I was heavier in 2012. (This is also a perfect picture showing why crop pants are not attractive.) It was right after this, that I really started to make changes in my lifestyle. I realized eating M&M’s for breakfast was starting to wear on me. Anybody with me?

My hormones were out of whack. I was tired all the time and my clothes were feeling a little snug.

I slowly started making changes to my eating habits. I started looking at what I was putting in my body and it’s been an eye opening two years.

Here’s a few things I’ve done over the last two years.

1. I started clean eating. When I first started I jumped and I went a little crazy with it. I still like to “clean eat” as much as possible but I don’t always. I give myself some grace. I try to eat organic as much as possible. I eat healthier snacks and I’ve cut back on sugar. I haven’t eliminated it but I don’t eat M&M’s for breakfast.

2. I cut diet coke out completely. I loved my diet coke but I knew it wasn’t good for me. I will drink a coke every once in a while (popcorn and a coke at the movie theatre is a must for me.) I don’t ever use artificial sweeteners.

3. I got serious about exercising regularlyI’m not a hard core exerciser. I do it because I know it’s good for me but after looking at the 2012 picture, I think the exercise has helped and I definitely feel better when I do it.

4. I use essential oils. I know there’s a ton of hype about essential oils on the internet right now (it’s because they’re wonderful!) but I started using them before all the hype. They’ve been a huge help with my hormones. I didn’t want to start taking estrogen and thanks to my essential oils, I don’t have to. I use them everyday!

(Using essential oils does not  mean I don’t go to the doctor. I go for all my check ups, pap smear, blood work, mammogram etc.)

These are some of my tips for feeling healthier, have you done anything that has helped you feel and look better?

6 Eyeliner Tips For Women Over 40

Eyeliner gets a little tricky as we age. I think we need it but how much do we need? And what color?

6 Eyeliner Tips For Women Over 40

Here are some eyeliner tips for women over 40:

  • Don’t skip eyeliner altogether—it’s a great way to make your eyes look more open and pop.
  • Choose brown or gray over black eyeliner. Black can be harsh and we are trying to soften our look.
  • Start at the outer corner of the eye and draw inward.
  • Keep the eyeliner thin and as close to your lash line as possible.
  • Line the lower lash line if you want to, but don’t rim the inside of your lower lash line.

Remember we want to define the eyes with softness and blending, not strict lines.

A thick liner (on the upper or lower lash line) can actually accentuate the areas that we don’t want to accentuate. It can make us look older.

Right now I’m using Almay eyeliner in black/brown. It definitely looks more brown than black.

What eyeliner are you using? Do you have any other tips?

Beauty For the Heart~~I love this prayer…..Dear God, I’m trusting you. I know you heard my prayer, your time, not mine. Amen.

He hears ladies, let’s just trust in His timing!

Have a blessed day!

3 Beauty Products For Women Over 40

3 Beauty Products for Women Over 40

Today I wanted to share 3 Beauty Products For Women Over 40, I’m using and why I like them. All of these products, I received as samples in my Birchbox over the last year. I tried them, loved them, and then ordered them. (Of course you don’t have to be over 40 to use them but they are good for our age.)

These are old news, but I still love my beauty blender. I have an expensive foundation brush, but I always go back to my beauty blender.

It blends your foundation into your skin in a perfect amount giving you a flawless finish. For maturing skin this is important!

You wet and wring the egg shaped applicator out (I didn’t do this when I used it the first time and then I read the directions) then use a small stippling motion to apply your foundation.

This product I received in my January Birchbox. I have used other brands of dry shampoo and didn’t like them. I tried Klorane and loved it.

I use a lot of product in my hair so I usually wash it everyday. But with this dry shampoo, I can skip days.

  • It cleans hair without water in 2 minutes.
  • Extends life between shampoos.
  • Ideal for on-the-go
  • Adds volume and texture
  • Received Allure’s Best of Beauty Award

I was told last year to use Benefit’s POREfessional under my eyes to help fill in wrinkles. I tried it and I loved the way it felt on my skin.

I recently realized you can use this as an all over primer for your face before applying makeup. I have to admit, I’m a little addicted to this stuff.

It feels amazing on my skin. I use it as an eye and face primer. The silky, oil-free formula diffuses pores and fine lines for an “airbrushed” finish.

Okay, so these are some products I’m using right now and loving!

I’m looking ahead to March and working on some posts. Is there anything you would like for me to write about? I love to hear from you!

Beauty For the Heart~~I’ve shared with you all recently that I’m studying Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby. It’s such a great study.

This week I’ve been reminded that God loves us deeply and profoundly. He loves us and has given us guidelines for living so we will not miss the full dimensions of the love relationship.

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3

Skin Care Products That Really Work

This is one of those hot off the press posts! This morning on The Today Show there was a segment from Good Housekeeping about the best anti-aging skin care products.

So in case you missed it, here are some of my favorites!

Skin Care Products That Really Work

This was the gold winner for day cream moisturizer, Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair. It has a 30 SPF, Yay! The best thing it’s only around $21!

Skin Care Products That Really Work

Boots No. 7 Lift & Luminate Night Cream was the gold winner for night creams. Again the price is great, around $21.

Skin Care Products That Really Work

Lastly, I would love to try this eye cream, Avene Retrinal Eyes. It has to be bought through a physicians office so I’m going to check with my dermatologist. It’s around $44 which is less than the eye cream I’m using now. This eye cream was the silver winner (the gold one was $260, which is out of my price range).

Skin Care Products That Really Work

Well, I just wanted to share this with ya’ll. If you’re like me, you’re always looking for good skin care that will slow down the aging process. Sometimes I think I wake up with a new wrinkle every day!

Have you tried any of these products? Don’t you love good products that don’t cost a fortune?

What I Wore-My Style

Happy Hump Day! If you’re new around here, Wednesday’s are when I share outfits I’ve worn over the last week. There are lots of 20 something girls sharing what they’ve worn so I thought it would be fun to show what someone over 40 wears. You can be stylish after 40! :-)

You’ll remember last week, I shared this picture of the lovely Stitch Fix ladies styling me for the Haven Conference.

Stitch Fix Ladies

Well, these are the outfits I wore. We had a reception on Thursday night so I wore a colorblocked dress by 41Hawthorn. I loved it and it was perfect for the reception!

Blue & Black dress

This picture was taken by the photographer that recently took some pictures of me, but I did wear this to one of the events at Haven. I love the colors in this sleeveless top.

White pants

I apologize for the poor quality of this picture but I took this with my iphone, I wore this outfit on the first day of the conference.  This is a red silk blouse by Daniel Rainn. I paired it with my INC skinny jeans from Macy’s and a pair of leopard flats. I also have on a green and blue necklace from Stitch Fix.

Red blouse

Lastly, I wore this floral print blazer with a pair of boot cut jeans from Kut from the Kloth.

Blue floral blazer

This sweet lady standing next to me is Geralin Thomas. She’s absolutely gorgeous and was kind enough to say she had read my blog.

Geralin is a professional organizer and the owner of Metropolitan Organizing, LLC . If she looks familiar, maybe you’ve seen her on Hoarders or The Nate Berkus Show.

I had so much fun at the Haven Conference. I’m still recovering from being gone for 4 days!

Which of these outfits were your favorite? I liked them all but the colorblocked dress was my favorite!

How To Wear The Ankle Boot

Last week on my Tie It Together Thursday picture, I showed this picture with black ankle boots. Krista, who sent the picture of the dress, had mentioned wearing ankle boots with it in the fall.

Several of you asked about the ankle boots. How do you wear them? Do you wear tights, what color, etc.

How to Wear the ankle boot

I’m not sure I would wear boots with this dress. If I did wear ankle boots, I would wear black tights but I would have to try this on to make sure it looked right.

I decided to do some researching and thinking about how to wear the ankle boot. It looks like they’ll be popular again this fall/winter season.

Let remind you, just because it’s in style doesn’t mean we have to wear it. Not everyone looks good in ankle boots.

Here are some things to consider:

~~Ankle boots cut your legs off at the ankle so if you have short legs, it will make them look shorter.

~~Try to wear an ankle boot that is close to your skin color to avoid them cutting off your legs.

~~Ankle boots accentuate the ankle, so if you have large ankles, you may not want to wear them with a dress.

~~Ankle boots look great with skinny jeans.

I found some pictures with ankle boots that I liked. These are great examples of how to wear the ankle boot.

Now, here’s the question. Can women over 40 wear ankle boots? The answer is yes! We can wear them but make sure they look appropriate with the outfit you’re wearing.

I usually ask myself, “Does this look classy or trashy?” Of course if it’s trashy stay clear of it! :-)

So what do you think of the ankle boot? Do you wear them, do you like them? Let me know!

Beauty For the Heart~~I recently found a book of my Mom’s called HOPE, pure and simple by Max Lucado. It has so many good quotes and that’s what I’ve been using for my Beauty For the Heart. I hope you like them!

“God hasn’t given up on you. He hasn’t turned away. He believes in you.” -Max Lucado. I’m so thankful God hasn’t given up on me!! I’m still a work in progress.

Have a blessed day!
