How to Look Stylish, Not Frumpy, After 50

Looking current over 50 does not mean trying to look 25. The goal is polished, intentional, modern, and still completely you. Today we’re talking about how to look stylish, not frumpy, after 50.

Here are the biggest things that keep an outfit from drifting into frumpy territory:

Prioritize fit over size

Vest (XS) | Pants (small, on sale for $23.99) | Sandals | Necklace

Clothes that skim the body usually look more polished than pieces that are overly loose. If the top is oversized, try a slimmer bottom; if the pants are wide, give the top a little structure.

Also, know your body type and dress for it. I know that I’m a pear shape, so I’m going to accentuate my upper body and wear clothes that don’t accentuate my hips.

Show some shape

Top (small) | Jeans (27) | Mule Wedges | Belt

A half-tuck, defined waist, cropped jacket, or well-placed belt can completely change an outfit. You don’t need tight clothes, you just don’t want to lose your whole silhouette.

Update your jeans

You don’t have to chase every denim trend, but an updated straight-leg, slim-straight, trouser jean, or modern wide-leg can make even a basic tee look current.

Tee (medium) | Sweater Vest (small) | Jeans (27) | Ballet Flats

Pay attention to proportions

This may be the biggest secret. Long tunic + long cardigan + loose pants can visually drag everything downward. Try creating contrast: shorter jacket with longer pants, tucked shirt with a fuller skirt, etc.

Let your shoes modernize the outfit

Top (small) | Denim (26) | Flats

A sleek loafer, contemporary sneaker, pointed or almond-toe flat, updated ankle boot, or simple sandal can rescue an otherwise basic look.

Don’t save the good clothes

Dress (small) | Heels

Dress up. Wear the jacket. Add the earrings. Carry the pretty bag. Roll the sleeves. Those little finishing touches are often what separate “I put clothes on” from “I got dressed.”

Be careful with too many “comfortable” pieces at once

Top (small) | Pants (small) | sneakers

I love a good two-piece set, but I try to make sure it fits me and isn’t too oversized, which can make you look frumpy. Also, Stretchy pants + an oversized top + a long cardigan + practical shoes can get frumpy fast. Keep the comfort, but make one or two pieces structured.

Use trends selectively

Tank (small) | Leopard Pants (small) | Flip Flop Sandals | Necklace

Pick the ones you genuinely like and mix them with classics. One current piece like these leopard pants is often enough to make the whole outfit feel fresh.

Don’t hide your body because it’s changed

You can dress your body beautifully today. Great style isn’t reserved for a certain age, weight, or shape. Accentuate your best features!

Hair, makeup, and accessories matter too

Dress (small) | necklace | clutch | Heels

They don’t need to be dramatic. A flattering lip color, great sunglasses, hoops, or a pretty necklace can make simple clothes feel wonderfully intentional.

And one rule I’d happily throw straight in the trash: “Women over 50 shouldn’t wear ___.” Age isn’t the deciding factor. Fit, proportion, occasion, and whether you feel wonderful in it are.

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’m also on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.

There’s such a sweet comfort in that word daily.
Not occasionally. Not when we’ve got it all together.
But every single day, our Lord carries what we can’t.

Some mornings, I wake up already feeling the weight of the to-do list, the concerns for my family, or the ache of a weary heart. And right there, before the coffee’s even brewed, I have to remind myself: I don’t have to carry this alone.

Our Savior is faithful to meet us in the middle of our mess. He doesn’t stand off at a distance, waiting for us to figure things out, He leans in, takes the weight from our shoulders, and says, “I’ve got this.”

So today, instead of holding on tight to what’s heavy, let’s hand it over. Praise Him in the middle of it all, knowing He’s strong enough for what we’re not.

Let your beauty shine from the inside out today!

  1. Thanks Cyndi for your practical comments for women over 50. I love that you’re a petite, pear-shaped woman over 50, I’m also a petite, pear-shaped woman but I’m 80. I have always loved fashion and clothes and still at my mature age I want to look classic, yet up to date. I so appreciate influencers like you and all those on Instagram and Facebook who give practical advice to women like me, not just for age 80 but for all of us out there who struggle with what to wear. I like to stick to Walmart and Amazon for my clothing because I can find current trends, but also classic looks for so much less than Nordstrom, Talbots and the other expensive places available for shopping. Thanks for what you do and especially your inspirational words at the end of every article you write. Keep it coming our way! Sincerely, Jan McKenzie

  2. I’m so happy you addressed those of us who are trying to camouflage our menopausal midsection. Thanks for the tips! Can you recommend any influencers we can also follow that dress to hide a tummy? I would love to see these tips in action!

    1. Thank you! I go to the gym and do different arm exercises. The main thing is to work not only your triceps and biceps but also your shoulders. Great shoulders make a big difference!

  3. Our life as Christians should make non believers question their disbelief. Love your words and devotions. Thank you Cyndi

  4. Such good advice Cyndi! I’m someone who struggles with an apple shape but I still want to, as you said, dress myself and not just put on clothes. I at least wear earrings and a little lip color before I go out the door. I’m still in search of a good concealer for more mature skin. Thank you!

  5. Great advice. Thank you for reminding us we are more than a number and that a beautiful heart matters just as much as our clothes.

  6. I loved everything about today’s post. Thank you for not making feel “bougie” because being put together makes me feel good. I love to dress in the latest trends and look forward to your posts.

  7. Great post, Cyndi! I totally agree with the 15 minutes! Makes a world of difference. I try to have time at least a yoga stretch and a verse or devotional that helps me focus on what’s most important. I’m going to share your verse with my Bible study ladies. Some of them are in the midst of trials. I think this is a good reminder.
    Thank you💕

  8. Hi Cyndi, love all of your advice.
It’s so hot here and according to forecast it will remain above average temps into November. We know how accurate those forecasts are, right? I tried the leopard pants from Amazon. You looked great in them. I thought that would be ok even if our temps were above normal. I ordered them but had to send them back. They smelled awful. They get great reviews. Maybe I should have washed them. It’s the only item that I have even had to return because of smell.

    1. That sometimes happens to me with Amazon clothes. I don’t remember that with the pants but I always wash them and they’re fine. But why do they smell???🤣

  9. One thing about women over 50 is most do not like nor look as good as you in a sleeveless top. I Work retail in a boutique for mostly women over 50 and sleeveless is a hard sell.

  10. My new routine starts with Bible study, so I’ve had to start getting up earlier to make sure I get that done first. Changes my whole day for the better! Then I can dress and get out the door feeling my best. And yes I always put on makeup and jewelry.
