How to Mix Feminine and Edgy Pieces

One of my favorite trends this fall is a bow blouse. Many of you are skeptical about wearing this trend because it’s something you have seen your grandmother wear years ago.

So today I’m going to show how to mix feminine and edgy pieces by adding a leather jacket to a feminine bow blouse.

Adding two contrasting pieces of clothing into one outfit is very chic and adds a fun and unexpected element to the outfit while also bringing balance to the look.

Start with your feminine piece.

The first step is to pick out your feminine piece. I recommend your focal piece of your outfit be feminine and then accessorize with a more edgy piece.

When looking for feminine pieces look for clothing items such as chiffon, lace, or silk. These types of materials are considered extremely feminine and they look amazing on all body types.

The colors that work best are light hues such as white, cream, blush, pastels, and neutral tones since these are softer tones and translate as very feminine.

My bow blouse from Loft is my feminine piece. (This blouse is 40% off and my pants are on sale too!)

The next style tip is to add darker hues to your look.

  • Shoes that have a darker color
  • A purse in a black or gray
  • Layering with a vest or leather jacket in a darker hue

The main thing is to add darker tones to make your feminine piece not as sweet, but not overpower your overall look.

I added this faux leather jacket as my edgy piece.

Beauty for the Heart~~Life is littered with sudden and unexpected storms. It’s important to remember the storm is the weather of your life not the climate. (Author Unknown)

God is our protector during those unexpected storms. Psalm 91:1-2 says,

Whoever goes to the Lord for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, can say to him, “You are my defender and protector. You are my God; in you I trust.”

Have a blessed day!

  1. Bows on blouses make me think of my mom. Growing up she always had blouses with ties or bows.

My sons truck broke down last night and was towed to repair shop. He has to borrow my car to go to work.

    Have a great day!

  2. This is a fun outfit and a opportunity to learn something new! I can shop my closet Yeah! Thank you for sharing

  3. HI,
I love the look and I have a question regarding the jacket…
For a long time I have been internally debating whether its better to buy a real leather (more expensive but will last forever) jacket or fake (cheaper but may not look so good after a while but gives me the opportunity to change my style sooner) leather.

    What are your thoughts?

    1. I bought two not so cheep faux leather jackets last year. They still look great and have fooled many. It gives you a chance to branch out to other colors and not spend a fortune.
Love the format of today’s tutorial, Cyndi. Your formula clearly explains why it works.

    2. Okay this is one of those times I would say do what i say not what I do. Ha!! I think a real leather jacket is a piece that is worth spending your money on.
I am going to get one at some time, but I haven’t found the one I want yet. A leather jacket will last for years and never goes out of style. It’s an investment piece.
      Hope that helps!

  4. Still can’t get excited about the bow blouses, they just seem “old fashioned” to me. It looks cute on you though just not a style for me. Love the black jacket.

  5. Cyndi, I love this outfit! Thanks for the instructional style of this post. I for one need all the instructions I can get!!!! By the way, I added your new web address to my contact list, but email is still going to spam. That’s ok, I just know to check the spam folder each morning, but you mentioned you had to purchase it. I want you to get your money’s worth. Now emails are from you, not grace and beauty. I hope this information helps. I really enjoy reading your post each day.

  6. Thank you so much for posting this today. I’ve been out shopping for new work clothes and found it hard, because I didn’t know what my style was called and now I know. I have always loved mixing feminine and edgy items. I think Jodie called it “Dichotomy” in dressing. Although, I’m over 50 I still like to feel a little trendy as well. I think that’s why I like your blog so much, it’s something you do very well.

  7. Such a fun look! I actually bought that blouse for my 25 yr old daughter a couple of weeks ago – she picked it out :). She loves the bow blouses, and I think she’s more of a “girly-girl” than I am. I will have to share this with her for inspiration. Thanks Cyndi!!

  8. I love bow blouses! But I’m a fan of feminine, flirty, and frilly. 🙂 Yhe outfit looks cute on you too! I’d wear black or denim jeans though.

  9. Not a fan of bow blouses as a rule (remember Tootsie!!!). HOWEVER, this is super cute! It is definitely due to you styling the bow blouse with a moto jacket. Such a great idea. I love leather and lace together and this is the same thing.

    Have a blessed day!

  10. Love this look — not a fan of the boots with the red pants though……maybe adds a heaviness to the outfit ? You look adorable though – I love the bow blouse trend (have seen it on dresses too – I think you styled one a while back from Glamour Farms).

  11. Darling outfit and post! This blouse reminds me of the bow blouses I use to sew and wear in the eighties. I made all my clothes back then when my career was just starting to blossom. I wore my small print bow blouse with a red skirt!!!!
I am ready to begin Christmas shopping, I’ll pick you up at 11am! My little convertible Sportscar is raring to go!

  12. great outfit. I just purchased a faux leather jacket very similar to yours. Can’t wait to wear it.
By the way, I had subscribed to your blog then the the posts stopped arriving in my mailbox? Are you having issues or am I? Should I resubscribe?

      1. Oct 21 my emails stopped showing up. Finally I found them in my Promo category of gmail. I’m just happy I found then.

        1. That happened to me, too! They had always arrived in my Primary folder until recently- I found them hiding in my Promo tab as well. For some reason, I can’t figure out how to redirect them into the Primary tab again though.

          1. Sara here is what my email service said:

They can drag the email from the Promotions tab to the Primary tab at any time, which will teach their Gmail account to prioritize putting those types of emails into the Primary tab in the future.

            Hope that helps!!

  13. I like this would have never thought of those pieces together. Quote was also great. I know what you mean to be without a car like your freedom is missing lol. Or you have a million places to go. Thank you.

  14. Love the jacket. Love the blouse. But probably would not pair together. Of course, it looks great on you as everything does, but f2f his look is not my favorite. Look for a hard to your posts every day!!

  15. Love love love the whole outfit. Cyndi, you’re making me want to go out and buy it! You look beautiful. The blouse in sz small is sold out online but sometimes I can wear a petite, so I may go with that.
