The Fall Shoe Trend I’m Wearing on Repeat: Ruched Mules

This fall, I’ve finally found a flat shoe trend that feels much more like me, ruched mules. I love the soft, gathered look, and they come in a variety of price points. They feel a little more interesting than a basic flat, but they’re still easy to wear with so many things I already have in my closet.

Mules are certainly nothing new, and I’ve worn different versions of them over the years. The ruching makes them feel fresh again for fall 2026, so I thought this would be a good time to talk about how I’m wearing them and other ways you can style mules.

What Are Mules?

Mules are shoes open at the back, so you can slide your foot right in. The front of the shoe can look completely different depending on the style. You’ll find everything from pointed-toe and almond-toe flats to loafer-style mules and dressier versions with a heel.

When Can You Wear Mules?

I especially love mules for spring and fall because they’re such a good in-between shoe. In early fall, I’m usually ready to move on from sandals long before the weather is cool enough for boots. Mules give an outfit more of a fall feel without covering your entire foot.

I’ll wear them with jeans, pants, dresses, and lightweight sweaters while the weather is still mild. Once it gets really cold, I’ll reach for shoes with more coverage.

Ruched Mules Are a Big Shoe Trend for Fall 2026

Flats have been having a moment for several seasons now, and this fall I’m seeing a lot more texture and detail. Ruching is one detail that keeps catching my eye. Instead of a smooth leather upper, the leather is gathered and slightly slouchy, which gives the shoe a softer look.

There are also so many pretty colors for fall. Chocolate brown is probably my favorite, but I’m seeing black, cognac, burgundy, and lighter neutrals too. If you tend to wear a lot of denim and neutral colors in the fall, any of those would be easy to work into your wardrobe. How I’m Wearing Mules This Fall

One reason I’ve been reaching for these so much is that I don’t have to think too hard about how to style them. They work with a lot of the pants and jeans I’m already wearing this fall.

What Jeans Look Best With Mules?

I don’t think there’s one jean style you have to wear with mules. Straight-leg, slim, barrel, ankle, and wide-leg jeans can all work.

The bigger thing to pay attention to is the hem. Since mules are backless and sit fairly low on your foot, I like a jean length that lets you see some of the shoe. If your jeans are too long and puddling around your feet, you lose the shape of the mule.

P.S. I’ve tried a lot of jeans lately, and these 12 pairs are my current favorites!

The leaves may change, but the faithfulness of God never does.

Seasons come and go, and time keeps marching on. So many things change over the years, our families, our circumstances, our plans, and even we ourselves change. But one thing always remains: God’s faithfulness.

In a world that is constantly changing, I hold fast to that truth. God is the same in every season. He was faithful yesterday, He is faithful today, and He will be faithful in whatever season comes next.

So as the leaves begin to turn and fall, I’m reminded that I don’t have to fear changing seasons. I can trust the One who never changes.

  1. Hi Cyndi,
I love mules (and loafers). However my dilemma with mules has always been whether you can wear socks with them. What are your thoughts and any options for socks – if that’s an acceptable look. Thank you and love all your content.

    1. I don’t wear socks with them but I think you could. I would probably stick to the same color scheme. If brown mules, brown socks.

  2. Amen for BFTH.
I love Mules. I’m wearing a pair of beige suede ones today with a gold buckle chain across the top. I’ve had them for going on my 3 rd yr now and they still look great as I don’t wear them in wet weather. They are Steve Madden. Actually I think you styled them back then. So true about making sure the pant hem is right.

  3. I live in the Northeast and usually gravitate towards a shoe with a back, and one that I can either wear with a trouser sock or regular socks.

Although mules look cute, I have never been able to wear them as they always feel like they are slipping off my feet when I walk. I have a cute block heel pair that I thought were adorable when I bought them but I don’t wear them anymore since they are too tough to walk or drive in. I feel the same way with flip flops and many sandal styles, and I can’t stand the feeling of that thong between my toes!

Give me a cute pair of flats in the early fall and a great pair of booties after that through spring!😎

  4. Your porch looks stunning! I’m not a fan of the mules. Personally I think they’re masculine looking. Like the pilgrims wore☺️

  5. Those are cute mules. I like mules and have two pairs. One is the Target brown pair is styled a few weeks ago. It’s still too hot in Texas for closed shoes. I wear sandals till sometime in October. Some people around here wear them year round. Lol. I’m too cold natured for that.

  6. I’ve never been able to wear mules- they just don’t stay on my feet but I’m happy with the loafer style I wear in the Fall.

    1. I think she puts something on them, but I’m not sure what. She also checks on them and makes sure they all still look good; she’s super good at her job!
