Striving for Holiness……

As I was having my quiet time this morning I noticed Mom had written something in the margin of her Bible.

Mom had lots of Bibles and I’m using one of hers. I love to see the things she has written while she was studying the word of God.

This is what it said, “You don’t just drift into a path of holiness, you strive for it, you have a life of discipline, you are determined to be holy!”

Isn’t that so true! I don’t know about you but holiness is hard for me.

I’m not going to automatically become holy just because I’ve accepted Christ as my Savior. I have to be actively working towards it.

I need to practice spiritual disciplines such as prayer, bible study, worship, fasting (yes, I said fasting. If you’ve never tried this one I would certainly recommend it).

The closer I get to Christ, the more my life will reflect Him.

I will be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, etc.

I love Phil. 3:10a in the Amplified Bible, 10[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly], and that I may in that same way come to know the power out flowing from His resurrection.

I am determined to know Him, to trust Him and to seek Him!

Just a reminder, I’m giving away the book Love & Respect By Emerson Eggerichs. Check out my giveaway here! It ends tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m.

  1. I was already in tears from the last post about your mother, but this one sent me over the edge. What a wonderful gift to have your moms old bibles. It’s like reading and learning from her. I’m so glad your blessed with this gift and that she still gets to be a part of your life!

  2. I came across your blog today not by mistake I’m sure. What it means to be holy is something that has been going through my mind this past week, thanks for your thoughts! What a blessing to have your Mom’s bible. I’m encouraged to stay in mine all the more because of what it might mean to my children some day.

    1. Soo thankful for Mom’s bibles. I also have a lot of journals but it’s still a little too painful to read right now.

  3. Cyndi, what a blessing to get to know you at Blissdom and to add your beautful blog to my regular reads. After talking with you for just 5 minutes last night it was obvious that you strive to reflect Christ in all you do. Love to you! Lisa~

  4. This message today has really touched my heart and made me think – your Mum must have been a very wise woman. Thank you, as I determine to try and apply this little gem of wisdom to my life! Mandy

  5. This was especially meaningful to me. How often have I had good intentions but failed to follow through? Your mom’s Bible is a precious gift for you-she is still very much alive through it! Hugs!

  6. I want to be “determined to be holy” as you mom wrote.

Isn’t it funny that seeing her hand writing nearly brought tears to my eyes? I am really growing to love that woman with every post you or Traci writes about her.

  7. Hi Cyndi.
So sweet that you have written messages to read and remember your Mom with.
I think it is a effort to be holy and to be disciplined to walk the Christian walk.
Disciples and discipline go hand in hand.

God bless you and have a sweet life,

  8. I agree with you completely. It requires constant thought and subsequent action. I’m reminded of guy who challenged himself to think of God 24/7 in everything – – tried never to let his mind wander. If you haven’t read Evelyn Christenson, I highly recommend her books. I started with “What Happens When Women Pray” and then read “Lord Change Me.” Both are outstanding, but “Lord Change Me” hits on what your Mother wrote in her margin. I keep re-reading both as they never get stale and I get something new each time. They really help in my Bible study. In fact, I’ve given “What Happens . . .” to more than 20 friends and family. You can find both used for as little as $1.99 at many sites. Thanks for your post and I hope you continue to cherish your Mom’s thoughts and writings as you go through her Bible.
