What I Wore on Our Michigan Vacation: Fall Edition

Our Michigan vacation gave me the perfect chance to wear some of my favorite fall outfits, and today I’m sharing what I wore.

We usually do a little bit of everything, walking around town, sightseeing, grabbing lunch, heading to dinner, etc. I don’t want to spend my vacation fussing with my clothes, but I still want to feel cute.

For this trip, I packed lots of denim, comfortable shoes, pretty fall colors, easy layers, and a couple of dresses for evening dinners.

If you’re planning a fall vacation or just looking for some casual fall outfit ideas for women over 50, I hope these looks give you a little inspiration.

Jeans, Sneakers + a Sweater

I’ll start with one of my favorite casual looks from the trip. I wore cropped jeans with a navy cable-knit sweater and tied a brown-and-white striped sweater around my shoulders.

The Ruti denim was gifted to me, but they’re pricey; I linked a similar, less expensive option.

Cardigan (small) | T-shirt (medium) | Vest (small) | Denim (27, similar less expensive option here) | Sneakers | Belt | Beaded Necklace | Necklace | Earrings

This is such an easy way to make a simple jeans-and-sweater outfit look a little more interesting. The striped sweater adds pattern and dimension, but it’s also practical. When you’re traveling in Michigan in the fall, temperatures can change a lot throughout the day, so having an extra layer handy is always a good idea.

I finished the outfit with a brown belt, layered necklaces, bracelets, and retro-inspired sneakers in a warm caramel shade.

You’ll notice that I wore comfortable shoes quite a bit on this trip. I love a heel when the occasion calls for it, but for sightseeing and walking, I choose shoes that are comfortable for all day.

Gingham Blouse + Cream Wide-Leg Jeans

Another daytime look was this gingham blouse paired with ecru-colored jeans.

Blouse (small) | Earrings | Denim (XS) | Belt | Loafers

I love wearing white and cream denim into fall. The key is pairing them with pieces that feel appropriate for the season.

The small gingham print gives this blouse a classic feel. I added a taupe belt and neutral loafers, which kept the whole outfit soft and casual.

This would also be a cute outfit for lunch with friends, running errands, church activities, or a casual fall get-together at home.

Burgundy Blouse + Dark Wash Wide-Leg Jeans

Burgundy is one of those colors that just says fall to me, and this blouse was perfect for Michigan.

Blouse (XS) | Denim (27) | Flats | Belt | Earrings

The rich color is beautiful with dark-wash denim, and I love the feminine details on the blouse, the gathered neckline, subtle texture, and pretty sleeves.

I paired it with dark-wash wide-leg jeans and brown flats for an outfit that could easily go from daytime sightseeing to dinner.

Houndstooth Jacket + Jeans

Of course, you can’t have a fall trip without a great jacket!

Jacket (small) | Top (small) | Belt | Denim (26) | Loafers | Earrings

This cropped houndstooth jacket is exactly the kind of piece I love because it does most of the work. I kept everything underneath simple with a dark turtleneck, straight-leg jeans, a brown belt, and neutral loafers. The jacket instantly makes the outfit look finished.

Leopard Pants + Chocolate Brown Jacket

These leopard pants are so comfortable and perfect for the fall season.

Jacket (small) | Top (small) | Leopard Pants (26) | Belt | Earrings | Clutch | Sunglasses | Loafers

I paired them with a sleeveless turtleneck and a chocolate brown jacket, then added neutral loafers and a dark structured handbag.

The chocolate brown jacket pairs well with the leopard pants. Chocolate brown is such a good alternative to black, and it works with denim, cream, camel, burgundy, olive, and so many other colors already in our closets.

Burgundy Midi Dress for a Dressier Evening

We stayed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, and evenings are dressy, so I packed a couple of dresses too.

Dress (small) | Earrings | Heels | Clutch

This sleeveless burgundy midi dress was such a pretty choice for fall. I love the classic silhouette with the defined waist and fuller skirt. It’s feminine, timeless, and elegant without feeling fussy.

I carried a black clutch and wore printed heels to add a little interest.

A Colorful Paisley Dress for Fall

Another dress I wore was this gorgeous red paisley midi.

Dress (small) | Heels

This one definitely makes a statement! The rich red background and colorful paisley pattern feel so appropriate for fall, and I love the long sleeves and high neckline.

I paired it with simple neutral pumps so the dress could be the focus.

Casual Mackinac Island Outfit

For a much more relaxed day, I wore a light blue Mackinac Island sweatshirt with black pants and sneakers.

Vuori Tank (small) | Vuori Pants (small) | Sneakers | Earrings

I grabbed a souvenir sweatshirt, and I loved the soft blue color of this one. I paired it with my Vuori black pants and white sneakers for a comfortable outfit that was perfect for walking around and enjoying the day.

The Frankie4 sneakers are definitely a comfort sneaker, and if you’re looking for one for travel, these are a great option.

I love this verse because it reminds me that we all have moments when we feel weak or like we’ve fallen short. But those are often the very places where God shows us just how strong He is.

Our weakness doesn’t limit God. In fact, it gives Him room to show off His strength. We are strong because He is strong, and His power is at work within us. We don’t have to depend on our own strength or our own abilities. His grace meets us right where we are.

No matter our failures, our struggles, or the places where we feel like we aren’t enough, His grace is sufficient. So today, instead of being discouraged by your weakness, let it remind you to lean into His strength.

  1. Mackinac Island is a bucket list trip for me! I fell in love with the Grand Hotel while watching Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour…if you haven’t watched it I highly recommend it.

    1. Oh, Joanne, you should plan the trip to Mackinac Island! There are self-guided tours of all the filming locations/spots from “Somewhere in Time” as well as the gazebo….it’s tucked away near the Fort but well worth the walk to see it and take your own photo in it!

  2. Being a Michigander, I LOVE Mackinac Island….I go there every year and never tire of it. So glad you enjoyed our beauty and history. I adore all of the outfits….fall is my favorite season and these pieces are perfect for the cooler temps which have arrived.

  3. Thank you for sharing your trip and your wardrobe. Will share how you transition your closet from summer to fall? What stables make it your fall/ winter wardrobe. God bless and have a great one.

  4. This is on my bucket list. Couple years ago an ad popped up about it and I watched the video and it sounds just like a place I’d love to see. As for the fudge I don’t like fudge so that won’t be a problem for me. lol I wonder what time of year is the best for visiting there…… weather wise?

  5. Cyndi,
I bought the Avara dress that is the red patterned dress you wore on your trip to Macinaw. We are the same size but the belt is too big and there are not enough holes. I’m assuming you had the same problem because I know your waist is smaller than mine. What did you do?
    It was stunning on you.
    Thank you, Shannon
