Fall 2026 Denim Trends: What’s In, What’s Out, and What’s Actually Wearable

It seems like every time we get comfortable with a jean style, something new comes along! For years, we all wore skinny jeans, and now there are so many different styles to choose from. Straight-leg, wide-leg, barrel, cuffed, cropped… sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

I really like a lot of the fall 2026 denim trends. I’m seeing darker washes, relaxed fits, and some longer lengths that feel fresh without being too trendy. As I said when I talked about the 2026 wearable fashion trends, you certainly don’t need to wear every trend that comes along.

Today, I thought we’d look at the jeans I’m seeing everywhere for fall, what’s taking a little bit of a backseat, and most importantly, which trends are actually wearable.

The Biggest Fall 2026 Denim Trends

If you’ve been shopping for jeans lately, you’ve probably already noticed some of these:

  • Dark indigo washes
  • Relaxed straight-leg jeans
  • Full-length wide-leg jeans
  • Barrel and curved-leg jeans
  • Cuffed jeans
  • More mid-rise options

1. Dark-Wash Denim

I’m starting with one of the easiest trends to wear: dark denim. I always see darker washes when fall rolls around, but there’s a lot of really pretty deep indigo in stores right now. I’m also noticing less fading and distressing, which gives these jeans a cleaner look. They’re also going to look so good with all the chocolate brown, burgundy, camel, and olive I shared about in my fall color trends report.

Don’t worry, medium-wash jeans are still around! I’m definitely not getting rid of mine. Dark indigo just gives us another option, and I especially like it when I want my jeans to look a little dressier.

If you’re looking for ideas on what to wear with your jeans, I shared 14 affordable sweater outfits for women who love classic style. There are lots of combinations in there that would work with dark denim.

2. Relaxed Straight-Leg Jeans

Straight-leg jeans have become a staple in my closet, so I’m glad they’re sticking around. This fall, I’m seeing some straight legs get a little looser, but they’re still not nearly as full as a wide-leg jean.

I think this is such a good style if you’re still hanging on to your skinny jeans and wondering what in the world you’re supposed to wear instead. A relaxed straight leg gives you a little more room without feeling like a huge change. They’re also easy when it comes to shoes. Sneakers, loafers, flats, ankle boots… you have lots of choices.

I’ve shared several of my favorite straight-leg jeans and outfit ideas if you want to see some different ways to wear them.

3. Full-Length Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans aren’t going anywhere for fall, but I’m noticing one big difference. They’re getting longer.

I’ve worn a lot of cropped wide-leg jeans the last few years, and I’m still wearing those, but now I’m seeing more full-length styles in stores. I actually think the longer length can be really flattering when you get the fit right.

The tricky part is the inseam. Too short and they can look a little off, but too long and you’re stepping on your jeans all day. Nobody wants that! Think about the shoes you plan to wear with them before deciding whether the length works.

If wide-leg jeans still feel a little intimidating, don’t feel like you have to jump into the widest pair you can find. There are plenty of styles that are somewhere between straight and really wide. I compared straight-leg vs. wide-leg jeans for women if you’re trying to decide which style might work better for you.

4. Barrel and Curved-Leg Jeans

Well, barrel jeans aren’t going anywhere yet! You may remember that it took me a while to warm up to this trend. Some barrel jeans have a very exaggerated shape, and those aren’t necessarily the ones I gravitate toward. Once I started trying styles with a softer curve, I realized how cute they can be.

I have a whole post on how to style barrel-leg jeans if this is one trend you’re curious about. I shared several outfits and talked more about what finally made this style work for me.

What Jean Rise Is Trending for Fall 2026?

Here’s another change I’m noticing in the denim department: mid-rise jeans are back.

Before anyone panics, high-rise jeans aren’t disappearing! In fact, there are still plenty of them. I’m just seeing more choices when it comes to rise, which I think is a good thing.

There are some lower rises showing up, too, but I’m not planning to revisit the super-low jeans of years past.

What’s In and What’s Taking a Backseat for Fall 2026?

I don’t love telling you that something is “out” because fashion just doesn’t work that way anymore. Most of us aren’t starting over with a brand-new wardrobe every season, and we shouldn’t have to.

I think it’s more helpful to look at what I’m seeing less of and what’s showing up more often.

Taking a BackseatI’m Seeing More Of
Heavy distressing and whiskeringClean, darker washes
Super-skinny fitsRelaxed straight legs
Cropped lengths on everythingFull-length jeans
Really rigid denimDenim with a little give
Basic hemsCuffed and interesting hems
One “must-have” jean shapeLots of different silhouettes

So, Are Skinny Jeans Out?

I know someone is going to ask this, so let’s talk about it. No, you don’t need to throw away your skinny jeans. They’re just not front and center the way they were several years ago. I still think there are times when a skinny jean works, especially with the riding boots I’m seeing trending this year.

One style I am seeing more of is the slim jean, and I think this is going to be a good option for anyone who isn’t ready to give up a narrower leg. Slim jeans fall somewhere between a skinny and a straight leg. They’re fitted through the hip and thigh, but they don’t hug the calf and ankle quite as closely as a traditional skinny jean.

I really like this middle ground because you still get that slimmer look without the jeans feeling quite so tight. They also work with so many of the shoes we wear in the fall, from loafers and flats to ankle boots.

What Shoes Do I Wear With All These Jeans?

This might be the hardest part about trying a new jean style. You finally figure out which shoes work with your jeans, and then the jeans change!

I shared about the shoe trends I’m seeing in stores for this season here, and thankfully, there are plenty of fall shoes that work with the denim trends I’m seeing this year.

Straight-leg jeans are probably the easiest because you can wear them with almost anything. Sneakers, loafers, flats, ankle boots, and heels all work.

With wide-leg jeans, I pay more attention to the length than anything else. You don’t want all that fabric pooling around your feet. Loafers, pointed flats, ankle boots, sneakers, and heels can all work depending on the length of your jeans.

Barrel jeans already have an interesting shape, so I tend to keep the shoe a little simpler. Flats, loafers, sneakers, mules, and ankle boots are all good choices.

I’d love to hear from you: Are you updating your denim this season?

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to stop by my blog. I’m also on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.

There is something comforting about the word dwell. God isn’t inviting us to visit His presence only when life gets hard. He’s inviting us to live there, to make our home close to Him.

The “secret place” is that quiet place of prayer, trust, and fellowship with God where our hearts learn to rest in who He is. The circumstances around us may not change, but when we stay close to Him, we change. Fear loses its grip. Worry gets quieter. And our hearts remember that God Himself is covering us.

Today, before you rush into everything waiting for you, spend a few moments under His shadow. Tell Him what’s on your heart. Open His Word. Sit quietly with Him.

Let your beauty shine from the inside out today!

  1. I bought a pair of Madewell slim straight that I just love! They are so comfortable and stylish. I also love my Gap Factory 70s high rise denim I’ve had 2 years now. Those are my go to if they’re in or out. They are narrow through the thighs and wide at bottom. I’m not interested in barrel denim at all. For me, they don’t appeal as they look silly. I’ll put my crops aside as I rarely wear them, and don’t like how they look in fall/winter with the shoes I own. But you rock all the styles!

  2. Just got a pair of the cuffed denim from American Eagle! They were cuter on then I thought they’d be!
Still love my slight barrel and straight,
    Enjoy your LTK conference

  3. I won’t ever wear any pants that make you look like you are preparing for an incoming flood. I just can’t. Kids got teased in my day for wearing pants that were too short. Some things you never forget. 😬

    1. I love Loft for reasonably priced petite jeans. American Eagle also has some in extra short sizes and they fit amazingly well!

  4. I think I’m going to stick to straight. I am liking the new trouser jeans. They are a bit dressier. I do have cropped jeans but will put them at the back of my closet once the temps cool off and just wear full length.
Enjoy your time at the LTK conference!

  5. I’m 5’3” and wide leg jeans make me look dumpy. I’m sticking with my low rise skinny jeans of all shade’s.

  6. I, too, have been slow to try barrel legs, but I plan to add some to the closet this fall. Thanks for the post!

  7. Thank you for this post! I love high waisted jeans and am going to hang onto those as long as I can! I have wide leg jeans, and a pair of Wrangler “really” wide leg and love them. If the lengths are too long, I cut the hem. I love frayed hems, and was cutting my hems off 30 years ago! I haven’t tried barrel leg yet, but I have a few pair of straight leg, even flare that I wear with my boots. Jeans are fun, and I tend buy what catches my eye, and fits well!

  8. I’m so ready for the return of mid-rise. I have always preferred mid-rise. A great article. This is great information!

  9. I already have several styles of wide leg, straight including looser fit, and bootleg. I wouldn’t mind a slight barrel. I would need a petite size and I don’t want to pay a lot for it. So far I haven’t found them. Skinny and low rise is one style I will never wear again. I’m old enough to say never. Lol.

  10. Are the wider leg jeans with large turn up cuff still in? I have a pair I have worn like one time. They look better to me with boots.
