The Color Everyone Is Wearing Instead of Black
Have you noticed how much chocolate brown is everywhere right now? I even called it out in my Fall Color Trends post I shared recently. For years, black has been my go-to dark neutral, but lately, I’m finding myself reaching for brown more and more. I’m not ready to say black is out, because it’s definitely not, but I do think it has some competition! Let’s talk about why chocolate brown is having such a big moment and how you can make it work in your wardrobe.

Is Chocolate Brown More Flattering Than Black?
It can be! Black creates a lot of contrast, and while it looks fabulous on some women, it can feel a little harsh on others. Chocolate and espresso brown give you that same dark, rich look with a little more softness.

Our coloring can change as we get older, too, especially as our hair gets lighter or turns gray. You may find that a deep brown is more flattering near your face than the black you’ve worn for years.
Who Looks Good in Chocolate Brown?
Before you decide brown isn’t your color, make sure you’ve tried the right brown. If your coloring is warmer, look for rich chocolate browns with a little warmth to them. If you have cooler coloring, espresso may be a better choice because it’s deeper and more neutral. It’s also probably the easiest shade to try if you’re used to wearing a lot of black.
The best test is the simplest one. Hold it up to your face in natural light. If you look brighter, you’ve found a good one. If you look tired or washed out, try another shade.
What Colors Go With Chocolate Brown?
This is another reason I’m loving brown so much. It plays well with almost everything!

Cream and ivory are easy choices, and chocolate brown looks so good with blue denim. I’m especially loving it with the darker denim washes that are trending this fall. You can read more about those in my Fall 2026 Wearable Denim Trends. For more color, try chocolate brown with burgundy, olive, red, soft blue, or pink.
Can You Wear Chocolate Brown and Black Together?
Yes! If you’re still following the old rule that you can’t wear black and brown together, you can forget about that one. I actually think mixing them is one of the easiest ways to make chocolate brown work in a real wardrobe because most of us already own plenty of black.
Try a chocolate brown sweater with black pants, espresso trousers with a black top, or black jeans with a dark brown jacket. You can also add a chocolate brown handbag or pair of brown boots to an otherwise black outfit.
Easy Ways to Replace Black With Brown
You definitely don’t need to replace everything black in your closet. But if you’re shopping for something new this fall, these are a few easy swaps to try.
Swap Black Pants for Chocolate Brown Pants

Top (small) | Pants (XS) | Sneaker | Beaded Necklace | Necklace Charm | Earrings | Beaded Bracelet
If black pants are a staple in your closet, chocolate brown pants are one of the easiest swaps to make. You can wear them with many of the same tops you’d normally pair with black, including cream, ivory, blue, burgundy, and even black.
I’m also seeing more brown denim this season, which is a fun way to change up your usual jeans without going too far outside your comfort zone.
Swap Your Black Sweater for Brown

Mockneck Sweater (small) | Jeans (27) | Jelly Flats | Beaded Necklace | Necklace Charm | Earrings | Beaded Bracelet
A chocolate sweater and jeans is about as easy as it gets! You can wear it exactly like your favorite black sweater, but the brown gives the outfit a softer look. I have more sweater ideas in my Best Lightweight Fall Sweaters.
Swap Black Boots for Dark Brown Boots

Dress (2) | Bracelet | Earrings
Brown boots have always been around, but the darker chocolate and espresso shades feel especially current right now. Suede is also having a big moment this fall, so a pair of chocolate suede boots checks two trends at once.
You can see more of the shoe styles I’m seeing this season in my Wearable Fall Shoe Trends for 2026.
Is Chocolate Brown Here to Stay?
Chocolate brown is definitely having a big moment in 2026, but I don’t think it’s a color we’ll be tired of next year. Brown has always been a classic neutral. What’s different right now is that we’re wearing the deeper chocolate and espresso shades in ways we used to rely on black.

Beauty for the Heart– Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place? Job 38:12
In Job 38, God answers Job out of the storm. After chapters of Job questioning and wrestling with his suffering, the Lord speaks, not with explanations, but with questions that reveal His majesty and sovereignty.
“Have you ever given orders to the morning…?” He asks. What a humbling reminder that we are not the authors of the dawn, God is.
There’s comfort in this truth. While we may not understand everything happening around us, we can trust the One who paints the sky each morning. He holds our days. He is faithful in the rising and the setting, in the quiet and the storm.

Interested in leopard print midi dress. Where do I find it please?
Hi Cyndi
Love the browns and feel they can be softer than black. What was the brown shade last year that was popular?
Thank you
Love the brown in certain shades since cooler toned skin and eyes. I had it on yesterday with ecru kick flare jeans and slide raffia sandals. Just a nod to fall. All shades look amazing on you! I do love brown and seems like it hasn’t been popular this much in a long time. Glad to see it return.
I bought the brown walker too I saw you had ordered the other day. Have you worn it yet? Mine should come today
Brown Walmart top. Not sure what happened there!
Great post! I agree the brown shades look stunning on many women. I am drawn to brown tones. But I still love black! I love the leopard dress and suede boots! Have a good trip to Michigan . The cool air sounds wonderful . Hot here in Texas- 102 yesterday.
